I'm a big Wegmans advocate, not only am I an employee but I am also a loyal customer. There are so many reasons why, but the first I would like to address is that as a consumer I want to be spending my money on food well worth it.
When Wegmans says "consistent" low prices, they really mean it. Satisfaction always guaranteed. At Wal-Mart or Tops or whatever grocery stores people shop at that aren't Wegmans- the store/generic brand is disgusting. If you're buying "Great Value" brand ice cream- that's exactly what you're getting. At Wegmans, the store brand is actually a brand name labeled with Wegmans name. That Wegmans ice cream you're buying at two dollars cheaper than the name brand is actually Perry's. You tell me what the better deal is- it's a no brainer. The Wegmans brand is cheaper and better, always. Not to mention - Shopper's Club. Shopper's Club is free and gives you great deal on private and brand name products alike.
If that isn't reason enough, according to the Washington Post:
"It can compete with Whole Foods, because its produce is some of the freshest in the business; it can compete with Trader Joes, because its prices are some of the most reasonable; and it can compete with Wal-Mart, because its stores are, well, massive."
Not only are you getting the most for your money, you're also getting great customer service. As an employee I can honestly say that Wegmans makes sure we provide customers with the absolute best service possible. We actually have to take classes Incredible Customer Service. Not only that, but we're treated right. Students are awarded scholarships, you get stuff just for each year you work there, and the environment is positive. Positive atmosphere, positive employees, positive customer service. Can you say the same about Wal Mart? Probably not.
There are also a plethora of departments inside Wegmans- it's like a miniature city. There's an entire prepared foods sections full of delicious self serve bars of homestyle food, Asian foods, Salads, you name it. They have a pizza shop to fit your needs whether you want a sheet, a slice, or wings -they have it. You'll never go to Subway again after having a sub prepared for you (I recommend getting oil on your sub, you won't regret it). They have sushi for the sushi lover and some Wegmans have a Burger Bar. Not only is it a great place to shop, it's also great to just grab a bite to eat.
There's a coffee shop within the store that provides you with lattes, breakfast sandwiches and local brews. YUM.
The bakery is also another Wegmans wonder. Full of delicious cakes, pastries, bread, bagels, donuts, and bialys. I highly recommend the Ultimate Chocolate Cake (it's to die for) and you can't go wrong with the Wegmans old fashioned chocolate chip cookies- absolutely amazing.
Then there's the Nature's Marketplace- full of delicious healthy (and a gluten free section) foods for the health nut. You'll find everything you need to have a nutritious meal. It always amazes me at what I can find there. Who needs Trader Joe's?
Within the grocery section you'll find everything you need to make your shopping trip complete. Dairy, meat deli, seafood, snacks, you name it- Wegmans sells it. They have Family Pack deals for those shopping for a large number of people, truly a bargain for your buck.
Not only is there a mass amount of items found within the grocery section, you will also find general merchandising (decorations, cards gifts, cooking ware, etc) and the bulk section. The bulk section could be considered the eighth wonder of the world. Wall to wall with colorful candies, chocolates, nuts, dried fruit, you can go crazy filling up bags and bags full of yummy snacks.
