It's hard to believe that no one has written this article already, but I'm glad I get to be the first to do it. If it hasn't come to the attention of the masses already, we need Kim Kardashian. She isn't the reality TV/home-movie star she used to be. No, Kim is a full blown mega-celebrity, and she has cemented herself into modern day culture.
First of all, the reason Kim has become so important to the people of the United States (and perhaps the world), is because she is the modern day "renaissance woman." She is an actress, socialite, model, and household personality. It's no wonder her annual income is around a cool $28 million.
Okay, so that whole last paragraph was heavy on the sarcasm. But we have to ask ourselves, what really made Kim Kardashian so famous? Was it her sex tape? Probably not. Plenty of celebrities have had sex tapes, but none have sustained fame and stardom like in the case of miss Kardashian. It couldn't have just been her personality, because then any one of her sisters could have been equally as famous as she. Perhaps it was her anatomy? Wrong again. Though Kim has quite impressive "assets" (get it?), not every beautiful, busty woman breaks through to the upper echelon of fame and fortune.
So what is it? What allows Kim Kardashian to have such a profound influence people around the world. It's because she is a the quintessential resemblance of our guilty pleasures. She represents our desire to indulge in materialism, narcissism, and other worldy vanities. It seems far fetched, doesn't it? But think harder. What talent does Kim Kardashian have that others lack? There isn't any. But her fame and popularity is propelled by a part of us that we know we shouldn't bury.
But it's innate to the human persona. We desire to show our wealth and success, even though we know that being humble is obviously the correct way to be acting. We constantly buy fancy cars and purchase big homes, just so we can show the people around us how well we've done. And though we'd like to think we don't, we scoff and judge the people around us that either have more or less than we do. We feel jealous and envious of the people with more material goods in the world, and similarly, look at people who have less than us with pity and sometimes disdain. Never once do we do the same thing when comparing each others happiness or peace of mind.
No, those characteristics aren't markers of success in society. They have been pushed aside as though they are the products and outcomes of obtaining expensive material belongings. Thus, Kim Kardashian has achieved fame the same way our society has decided what it truly values. She grows richer and more popular with the more narcissistic we become. Society has moved ever-closer towards a state that values materials and social status more than actual relationships with people. What better way to showcase these values than to catapult people that embody these characteristics to the highest pedestal fame and fortune.
Sadly, it is our values that we uphold that determine the makeup and distribution of celebrities. If we aspire to have values such as intelligence and goodwill, then people will be rewarded for embodying those qualities. But instead, we tend to concentrate on ways in which we can out-buy or out-dress our peers. The game we play has a currency of jealousy and conceit. And there is no better way of masking the pain of jealousy than with the material goods that supposedly make us happy. Without treasuring these values in our society, our girl Kim would be nothing. But we obviously wouldn't want that.
Without Kim, we would never be able to break the Internet. Without Kim, there would be no one worthy enough to wed the immaculate Kanye. Without Kim, I would have never known of Kendall Jenner. So with that, we owe miss Kim Kardashian for all that she's done. She's shown us what our society truly values and how misconstrued our goals and objectives can be. But I wouldn't fear for Kim. It looks like society isn't necessarily looking to change its course from the direction we're heading, which means Kim should be in good hands for a long time to come. Let's just hope her looks and "assets" hang around for the ride as well.
