I spent the weekend at my grandpa’s cabin on Lake Puckaway. It was the most relaxing, enjoyable, and inexpensive weekend I have had all summer. Most people think of the Wisconsin Dells for a quick getaway. But, that can get pricey pretty fast. You have to pay for gas, food, and a place to stay. Not to mention that almost all activities cost money. Sure you can mini golf or go to a water park, for the right price. Not to mention all the long lines, crowds of people, and screaming children.
Most of us can’t afford to live on a lake, which makes it that more special to visit. Since it was my grandpa’s, we stayed there for free. However, most cabins can be quite reasonable especially if multiple people chip in. We squished nine people in a two bedroom cabin (thanks to the porch). Cabins can be tiny, but that’s okay because you spend most time outside anyway. We also carpooled up there to save money on gas, and to save money on food, we did not eat out once. Grilled hamburgers are a great and quick way to feed a big group. The next day we also grilled out, and added some baked potatoes and sweet corn on the side. We had a very eventful weekend on the lake. Friday night we went on a quick boat ride before starting dinner. Then as the sun was setting we sat on the deck and enjoyed each other’s company. My aunt and uncle joined us for the weekend. Since I don’t see them very often we had plenty to talk about. Saturday morning we headed to the town over for their flea market. There you could buy anything from homemade spices and fresh produce to old knick knacks for the house. The best part of being at the cabin is not having a schedule or time limit. We could wonder around shopping without any sense of urgency.
Once back to the lake my mom and I headed out on the kayaks. It is so peaceful drifting by the shore while talking about anything and everything. At the lake you forget about your problems back home. You forget about going back to work Monday morning. Instead, you reflect on your life and everything you have to be thankful for. It makes you appreciate the beauty in life and how much we take for granted in our hectic lifestyles. There is nothing more serene than sitting around a campfire while toasting a delicious s’more.
There are numerous other activities to do at the lake or in a cabin. Of course there is swimming, kayaking, tubing, or just floating, but there are also board games, card games, and euchre to play. Us girls opted to paint our finger and toenails. However, most of the time I was there I was content with doing nothing. I was satisfied with relaxing and allowing my thoughts to wander. Therefore, next time you are searching for a weekend getaway think about exploring one of the many lakes Wisconsin has to offer.
