March is National Social Work month, so I figured I would use this as an excuse to tell everyone why I want to be a social worker.
Yes, I want to be a social worker. No, I do not want to be just a caseworker for the next 60 years. I feel like in the minds of most people a career in social work is equivalent to a caseworker. Yes, this is an aspect of the field, and yes I do plan on doing this for some time but I do have other aspirations.
There are so many opportunities in this field (I will not list them all- google it), and every single one of them helps people and children in a way I’ve always wanted to. I always got the question “Are you going to be a teacher like your mom?.” My mom is a preschool teacher and this is a question I get constantly because I love kids and I also happen to work at said preschool. For a while in high school, I did think of becoming a teacher, but it’s not for me, so as an answer to everyone wondering, I will not be a teacher.
I was able to find a way to show my love for kids, my passion for social justice issues, and satisfy my need for almost constant change. I will be dealing with real people going through real problems. I will get to help these people and fight for their rights. There are over 600,000 social workers in America, and their jobs, in my opinion, are so incredibly important.
I knew I wanted to go into this field when I first learned of the researcher/storyteller Brene Brown, and if you don’t know who she is I beg you to look her up and watch the Ted Talks. Her research inspires me and showed me what a degree in this field could lead to. The work she does shook me to the core and opened up a passion in me for work like hers.
No, I will most likely not become an overnight Ted Talk celebrity with multiple books and all of these other amazing things, but there is totally a chance.
No, I did not choose the highest paying career path, and yes, it does require lots of school and, therefore, debt.
But I did choose a career that I believe will suit me best and fulfill me in a way no other job could, and that’s all I can really ask for.
