About two weeks ago, my dad and I started throwing around the idea of remodeling. Futuristically speaking, it seemed to be an easy resting, simple idea. I was super stoked just imagining all of the potential this old, rickety place has. It sounded great to me. But, I didn’t really give it anymore thought after we finished speaking. In a few weeks, we could get all this stuff done and this house would look so much nicer and feel so much "homier". In a few weeks, we could do all the remodeling we want... But first, let me do what I want to do, right?
Well, a few days later, I came home from school and my dad was already replacing the doors... already... after only a few days. And as always, like any girl does, I got out my phone to complain to my best friend. I began typing out text after text; of course sending each thought in an individual message in order of which popped into my brain first;
"LAST WEEK my dad said, 'lets remodel' and now our house is a construction zone. i'm just kinda like 'woah'... didn't we just talk about this yesterday? I need preparation time."
As always, these texts were being sent faster than my mind had time to process. But, almost as immediate as my eyes began to scan back over my fresh, blue iMessage bubbles, God began to stir something in my heart. I kept looking at that very last sentence; "Didn't we just talk about this yesterday? I need preparation time".
Then God spoke two words into my spirit that I'll never forget;
Why wait?
"Why wait another minute for something we should've done yesterday?" In that moment, these Rascal Flatts lyrics rang truer than ever...
Why wait?
You see, we do this all the time. We excitedly discuss plans of remodeling. The whole idea sounds amazing, right? To dream of the seemingly impossible things God will deem possible for the advancement of His kingdom. We get down on our knees, we come to the very end of ourselves, and we tell God that we're ready. We make promises and plans with Him that we'll change our ways - that we'll allow Him to mold us into His image, that we'll finally start living for Him. We opt to sacrifice our ways for His in order to see Him when we look in the mirror. Remodeling sounds amazing... until we realize the detonating demolition it's going to bring in order to finish the work.
And it's like, almost immediately... God begins to replace the doors we've been hiding behind, and we can't help but think, "Already?"... "We just talked about this yesterday...".
And in the midst of walls being torn down...we choose to wait... not on God but for God. He's the beginning and end, so He'll be around forever, right? Waiting seems like the easiest option. It seems justifiable. "Let me live a little bit first, and I'll get with you afterwards." We were just discussing remodeling. We were so excited to be used and for others to see Jesus in us. But the thought of God renewing and using us right now is crazy. However...
Sacrificing a relationship with God to wait and "live" is like signing a contract to build a house with a company who specializes in destruction.
It doesn't make sense. It sounds crazy. It is crazy. So, why in the world would we wait? It's time to remodel, and it's time to remodel now. God created you for a very specific and purposeful reason. The process in which He remolds you may be a little bit painful, but do not let that discourage you. The pain is necessary. The only way to truly renew, is to do away with the old.
But, the destruction of the old and withered is the constructive restoration of the original plans.
And, for that kind of pain, there is purpose. So, why wait another minute for something we should've done yesterday? Jump up on your feet, put your hard hat and your good boots on. We've got work to do. It's time to remodel; no preparation needed. If He's already replaced the doors, just imagine how much more He's going to restore in you in due time. Don't wait for your relationship with Him. God will use it all - your hurt, your pain, and your experiences to advance His kingdom. He will use the things that have been holding you captive to ultimately serve His purpose in your life.
Don't wait. Let God restore and rebuild your life today.
