Tumblr is undoubtedly my favorite social media site. And here are a few reasons why:
1. I can be nerdy on Tumblr. On Tumblr, you don't need to create an account for yourself, like you do on Facebook or Twitter. You can dedicate an account to your favorite tv show or movie, and focus solely on those interests rather than yourself. I have a lot of interests that are rarely expressed on other social media sites but completely dominate my Tumblr account.
2. I blog for myself and no one else. Often, on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, I'm extremely mindful of what I post, knowing that hundreds of people that I know in real life will see what I post. But on Tumblr, I only have a few people from real life follow me, so I'm free to post whatever I want for myself and myself only.
3. I can openly express my opinions. Facebook isn't the most conducive site for posting opinions or long posts about my feelings, but on Tumblr I can do that, and more.
4. Facebook and Twitter are tired. I'm not particularly interested in what other people are doing more often than not, and I'd much rather look at pictures of my favorite celebrities than see what my high school friends and neighbors are doing for the weekend. Plus, the amount of click-bait articles that appear on Facebook and Twitter is ridiculous.
5. Tumblr is social -- to a point. You don't have to be social on Tumblr, you can merely create an account and build a blog for your own pleasure, or you can chat with other users and build networks of friends. There's a lot less pressure to be social or to be doing something great with your life, which is what I've found is prevalent on other social media sites.
6. It has a creative aspect. One of my favorite pastimes is creating graphics, edits, and GIFs to post on Tumblr or re-designing my Tumblr theme. In doing so, I've gotten much better at using Photoshop and HTML code.
7. It's got a great sense of humor. There are some hilarious posts on Tumblr, and the memes are plentiful.
8. Tumblr is a great place to learn new things. I've learned a lot from Tumblr -- about people from different cultures, about how to use HTML code, and I've learned about how to interact with different kinds of people. Tumblr is often not the best place for other opinions (it tends to be very liberal), but it's taught me a lot about rationally evaluating situations and forming opinions on touchy subjects.
9. Tumblr always gets news really fast. I always hear news on Tumblr first before any other site gets it.
10. My blog is like an archive. I'm a much different person now than I was a few years ago, and I can see that on Tumblr. My posts years ago were much different than they are now. Plus, I can take pride on how comprehensive my blog is and how much work I put into it.
11. It's addictive in a way that Facebook and Twitter are not. I could spend hours on Tumblr (admittedly, not doing anything very productive). It's my go-to social media site when I'm bored or when I want to spend time on the computer.
