Everyone loves Mexican food. It is just a fact, and an especially true fact of life in Athens, GA. Finding someone who doesn't like chips and queso at UGA is like finding a Gators fan at UGA. The proof is in the sheer number of Mexican eaterys in the area. A quick search on Google of local Athens restaurants that serve Mexican and Latin American cuisine pulls up a shocking amount of results.
Within the relatively small area that is Athens, Georgia there are at least a dozen Mexican restaurants. So get ready for a road map that takes you to a few of the all time best Mexican restaurants in Athens.
1. Taqueria Del Sol.
Sometimes known as Taq, it is a quirky restaurant on Prince Ave that serves traditional dishes with a southern twist. It offers items such as brisket enchiladas and fried chicken tacos with jalapeño mayonnaise. Sides offered range from refried beans to turnip greens. They also offer traditional margaritas for those of age.
2. Cali and Titos.
This is another individualistic Athens eatery. Cali and Titos is a Cuban inspired restaurant that has an eclectic atmosphere with a lot of outdoor seating and a BYOB deal with customers. It is a cash only restaurant but the tostones or fried green plantains are totally worth digging out that pocket change. Cali and Titos is located on South Lumpkin St.
3. Agua Linda Mexican Restaurant.
This is one of the classic, traditional Mexican restaurants in Athens. Agua Linda has two locations, one on Timothy Rd. and the other on Prince Avenue. Agua Linda is a family owned business that offers dishes such as the Agua Linda manager burrito, fajitas and tacos. If authentic Mexican is what you are craving then head to Agua Linda.
4. Taqueria La Parilla.
This restaurant is on the east side on Jefferson Rd, but the food is a personal favorite. It is authentic Mexican cuisine that offers all the traditional favorites in a nice environment with excellent customer service.
5. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.
I would be remiss to not mention Fuzzy’s on the list of Mexican restaurants in Athens on North Lumpkin St. Fuzzy’s is a casual eatery with dishes like shredded chicken tacos and some of the best chips and queso I have ever eaten in Athens. Fuzzy's might be most famous, however, for their wide range of flavor of frozen margaritas for those of age. A customer favorite is the Mango-Strawberry.
There are a lot of other Mexican restaurants in Athens like Sr. Sol, Over the Border, Azteca and Tex-Mex places such as Barbaritos, Chipotle and Moe’s, so there is something here for everyone. Those are just a few of the more original restaurants Athens has to offer for the everyday Mexican food enthusiast (which being honest should be everyone, everywhere). So next time a craving for queso hits you avoid the stale chips and old queso in your apartment fridge and hit up one of these college town favorites.
