Why The Little Things Really Do Matter In Life
Alexandra Martin

As humans, it is common for us to focus on the big things that happen throughout the day. They usually have an emotional impact on us, such as making us happy or upset. It is our tendency to focus on that thing that went wrong and wonder why it even happened. This is where the little things come in, this is where they actually matter. Instead of focusing so much on the bigger things that happened during your day, spend some time to count your blessings even if they’re small.

It's important to take the time to reevaluate yourself at whatever point in life you are at. There are so many different factors that lead us away from our goals and values. When you decide to take this step in your life, you will find inner peace and joy. It really helps you to take a step back and be thankful for the things you normally wouldn't appreciate.

Ever since I have changed my mindset to focus on the little things in my day, I have caught myself smiling so much more. I find myself remembering things like the man at the store smiling at me when we passed each other or the woman who held the door for me when I had too many things in my hands. Some people will say that these sort of things are because it's the kind thing to do, which they are correct. However, people don't have to do these things and it's important to recognize that.

You may be asking yourself, why should the little things mean so much to me? They should matter to you because, at the end of the day, you're in charge of your own happiness. If we focus on the big things too much, it can take away the importance of making someone else happy for doing something little. They should matter because it should give you hope that people can be good and that other people really do care about you.

Since we never know what people are going through, it's essential that we keep an open mind about how much our actions can mean to them. You simply buying a coffee for someone could give them $4 extra dollars to spend on their child's school supplies or for another coffee when they are in dire need of one. When you text an old friend and tell them to have a good day at work, it could literally give them a different outlook on their day. Never underestimate doing little things for people, it could seriously make their entire week.

Something that we should all strive for is to become apart of our friends and strangers lists of the little things that made them smile every day. Of course, this is easier said than done, but it can be as simple as asking someone how their day is going. It's important to remember that you really don't know how much of an impact you can make on someone's day, so you might as well leave a good impact. Once you start implementing this change in your life, it'll be a lot easier to see the things that others are doing for you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
