Why Syracuse Students Choose To Study Abroad

At the Syracuse Center School in Florence, Italy, there are roughly 300 students studying there this semester. Of those 300, 200 of them are Syracuse students and the rest are students from other universities around the country including places like Harvard and Cortland. With this mix of students comes different reasons as to why they chose to study abroad in the first place.

As an engineering student, people often question how we're able to study abroad with our crazy course schedule. Luckily, Syracuse makes it super easy for us to keep up with the rest of our peers to graduate on time while still gaining the same experiences of those with lighter course loads.

Personally, part of why I chose Syracuse in the first place was because I knew I wanted to study abroad in college and many other schools don't make it possible. I've always wanted to study because I wanted to gain first-hand experience about what it was like to live in a foreign country with a host family who doesn't speak a ton of English. It's also the perfect opportunity to travel and there is so much to see in both Italy and Europe as a whole.

I began to ask my friends why they chose to study abroad and grouped together the most common responses below.

1. To get out of Syracuse

2. It was an opportunity I probably wouldn't get at any other point in my life

3. Didn't want to miss out on the opportunity

4. To travel a bunch, learn about the Italian culture, and get out of my comfort zone

5. Wanted to travel all the countries

6. To experience a different culture

7. To experience life in a brand new country and see how it differs from life in America

8. All my friends were going

9. For the new experience as I had never left the United States

10. To escape the 'rat race' of last semester

11. Just to try something new

1. Don’t buy Textbooks the first week of class.

2. Ratemyprofessor.com! PLEASE use it!

3. Don’t wear your lanyard or ID around your neck, it makes it obvious for everyone to know you’re a freshman.

4. Always bring a charger or headphones wherever you go.

5. Don’t miss out on the free food on campus.

6. You don’t always need to dress up…Trust Me!

7. Get More Involved!

8. Don’t feel pressured to hook-up with anyone.

9. The Freshman 15 is REAL! Don’t brush it off!

10. It’s OK to say NO!

11. Drinking / Partying doesn’t equal popularity.

12. Try to spend less time in your dorm.

13. It’s OK to change your major!

14. Always take an Uber or Lyft!

15. Never go to a party alone!

16. Start your resume early.

17. Keep your door open when in your room.
