When I left California to start my freshman year of college in New York two years ago, it never really occurred to me just how much I would miss the food. Sure, I knew I wouldn’t be able to drive to In-N-Out at 1 a.m. anymore and I’d miss a few of my favorite foods, but I didn’t realize I’d be giving up so many of my favorite places once I got to New York.
Southern California is home to amazing food, and while many items on this list can be found other places, it always tastes the best at home. Here are some of my favorites.
1. In-N-Out
What would a list about Southern Californian food be without In-N-Out? It may seem cliché, but everything about In-N-Out makes it an appropriate contender on a list like this. You really can’t order the wrong item from here. Whether you’re ordering a Neapolitan shake, animal-style fries, or a regular cheeseburger, everything tastes delicious.2. Açaí bowls
Açaí bowls are without a doubt one of my favorite foods at home. It’s refreshing, filling, and a healthy alternative to grabbing a pint of ice cream. Açaí originates from Brazil and is like a thick sorbet. Top it off with granola, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, honey and a little chocolate sauce, and you’ll be wanting a second bowl before you ever even finish the first!3. Mexican Food
Mexican food in Southern California is incredible and you can never get enough. Every day is Taco Tuesday when you live here.
4. California Burrito
While the California burrito can fall under the category of Mexican food, it deserves its own section. Filled with carne asada, guacamole, French fries, Pico de gallo, and cheese, it’s like nothing else you can find on the menu. If you’re from the area, it’s almost guaranteed to be a fan favorite.
5. Sushi
The best sushi and saki bombs—what more could you ask for?
6. Rubios
I wouldn’t say Rubio's is the most authentic Mexican cuisine, but it’s still a personal favorite and just so great I couldn’t not talk about it. You can go for one of the main entrees, or even opt for a kids meal with a quesadilla, chips, a churro, and a vanilla Coke, which is honestly amazing.
7. Ruby's
Ruby’s Diner is perfect for a burger and a Butterfinger milkshake dinner on the pier.
8. Healthy Foods
There are healthy options for pretty much everything under the sun in Southern California. From gluten free/vegan free restaurants, to organic grocery stores and pressed juices, you can find it all. Healthy alternatives have become so common that I wouldn’t be surprised if you walked into a smoothie shop, passed a row of detox juices and boxed water, and were greeted with “would you like to try the wheat grass shot?” Nonetheless, the healthy options are also some of the tastiest foods you’ll find in the area.
