I Choose To Be A Sociology Major And Here Are 3 Reasons Why I'll Never Look Back

Sociology is a social science that looks at the development, structure, and functioning of human society along with social problems.

In high school, I took a sociology class for a semester, and I liked it. But honestly, I didn't think I would ever take a sociology class again. I was wrong. During my freshman year of college, I was a different major, but I felt like it wasn't for me. Not because I didn't love the subject and that I wasn't great at it, but the fact that I wanted to do something different than what I thought I wanted to do.

So, I looked through the list of majors, and did a lot of research and thinking before making a decision. In my spring semester, I decided to switch my major to Sociology.

At first, I was a little nervous because I've only taken one semester of Sociology in High School, but as I took more and more classes, the better and more confident that I had become in the field. I know that I made the right choice by choosing this major.

Throughout my time here, I've learned a few things that I want to share with you.

Social Sciences not only include Sociology, but it also includes fields like Psychology and Anthropology

I want to tell you that even though they overlap in some ways, they are different and unique. Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. Anthropology is the study of human societies and cultures and their development.

I can do a lot with my major.

I study different fields such as economics, political science, anthropology, psychology, and so many other fields besides sociology. So, I can do a lot with my major including business, community services, health services, education, law, publishing, social services, and criminal justice.

Lastly, you get a whole new outlook on the world.

I will never look at the world the same way again in a good way. I have a new perspective in the world. I learned about different societies along with various topics such as gender, class, and race. I get to study history and patterns, and help solve old and new problems.

And that is why I choose to be a Sociology Major. It wasn't about the money. It was because I can do a lot with my degree, and I like what I can do with my degree.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
