Why You Should Get a Summer Internship

Summertime is a time for adventures and new experiences. It is a time to travel the world and learn more about ourselves in the process. But as each summer passes, we grow another year older and another year closer to graduation. As we college students get older, we are continually lectured on the importance of taking on internships while in college. The more that we are told we have to do an internship, the more it seems like a chore on the list towards graduation. Well, what if I told you that you could do an internship while having the time of your life? What if I told you that you could travel the world and live in another country during the duration of an internship? Now, that doesn't sound like a chore at all anymore, does it?

Summer internships are known to be an incredible time to intern as a college student, especially one particularly active in Greek Life. Just one month from now, I will be boarding a plane to London, England to live for my entire summer and intern, and I've never been more excited! Here are some reasons why summer internships are the best types of internships:

Stand Out Among Your Peers

While other people are watching Netflix and staying at home over the summer, you could be having the time of your life in another place. Internships definitely give you a one-up on others in that you are being productive with your summer and learning new things. Internships provide you with new knowledge that can help you to get an amazing job right out of college and make connections with all types of incredible people in the job world. While others are stuck in Gainesville or in their hometowns, you will be getting a taste of the real world. The possibilities are endless with summer internships! Not only can you get one in your home state, but also anywhere around the country or even the world!

Won't Have to Miss a Semester of Greek Life

Many people try to undergo internships in the fall or spring instead of the summer semester. This definitely doesn't go without sacrifices though. In the fall semester you would miss football season, roadtrips and Homecoming and in the spring you would miss ski trips, spring break and formals. I, myself would not want to miss out on my college experience as time already flies fast enough during the year. During the summer, you aren't missing any Greek Life events and can instead focus on yourself and your future. You won't feel like you are missing out on your friends and college experience!

You Can Live in a New Place

Ever thought about living in New York City or Los Angeles? Well, then go ahead and apply, apply, apply! You're only young once and you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity to live in a place completely unlike your own hometown or college town. The United States has opportunities all over the country for college students looking to gain experience, especially over the summers. Living and working in another state is a great idea because you will be able to gain experience as well as enjoy the feeling of really living on your own and being independent for the first time far from home.

Study Abroad Option

Many colleges have the opportunity to study abroad with an internship in another country! These are amazing opportunities because it's unlikely that you will ever again have a three month period to travel the world, be able to get college credit as well as interning at the same time. You can make lifelong relationships with people from other countries and learn more about yourself at the same time. Who knows? Maybe you'll end up working in Europe yourself one day for your dream job!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
