Every day it seems like you read something condemning Millennials. Whether it be how we are the laziest, most reliant on social media, or incapable of holding a job or conversation. Gen Y seems to have a lot to say about the things that Millennials say or do.
For the most part, yes, Millennials are really reliant on social media. We spend days trolling Instagram and Facebook, worrying about what other people do with their lives. But can you blame us? The resources are there. It’s just the natural progression of the world.
Older generations spent their time on their own private phone lines, leaving messages for one another or even sending telegrams and letters to people far away, long before the instant gratification of texting.
No one was condemning them.
Technology is a part of life, and it is here to stay.
Millennials are resourceful. We build our own personal brands through Instagram. Some of us are creating businesses for ourselves and marketing our talents on social media to share with the world.
Millennials are informed. Although we sift through mindless posts, we still read about what's going on in the world. We are the first to be notified about the news, and the first to weigh in on it publically via social media.
Millennials are unique. No other generation before has ever had to conquer and navigate through the challenges of technology and having your every move reported and looked at. No one has had to watch their mistakes become public, or all of their private business known.
Millennials want to enact change. Although people talk down on social media, claiming that it is addictive and detrimental to our generation, social media has been used to raise awareness and enact change on so many fronts.
Older generations spend time critizing Millennials and their newfound lifestyles, but why not celebrate them? Chances are, things will not digress back to how they once were. The sharp criticism that the possibility of we, Millennials, changing things for the better by using the very social media should come to an end.
Beating our generation down will not change anything; it is about changing the way society views Millennials and the way we use social media
