One of the most popular shows of the late 90's was Rugrats. For anyone who watched this show we know the five main characters practically by heart. There was Tommy, the fearless leader of the group, Phil and Lil, the dynamic duo who were always down for a good adventure as long as it involved a good mud pie and worms. Angelica, the older, self proclaimed boss of the group. And last but not least there was Chuckie.
Chuckie, was far from fearless and was the almost always the voice of reason in his adventurous group of friends. While growing up and watching the show I (along with all of my friends) always wanted to be like Tommy. Bravely throwing caution to the wind, and heading out on a dangerous adventure. But I always knew that I identified more with Chuckie. I was a shy kid who was an avid follower of the rules. Throwing caution to the wind was never my forte. To be honest I was a bit of a control freak. Looking back I realized that I was often embarrassed of my Chuckie like qualities, always aspiring to be more like Tommy.
As an adult I now realize the my Chuckie like qualities were nothing to be ashamed of. And here are a few reasons why.
1. Cautious. Like Chuckie I was a cautious child. If anything I learned to be hyper aware of my surroundings. Looking out for not only the well being of myself but also of my friends.
2. Brave In Times Of Need. Chuckie stepped up to the plate when his friends needed him most. Although he was not known as the bravest in the group he was always there for his friends when they needed him.
3. Loyalty. Although Chuckie often protested his friends frequent adventures, in the end he always accompanied them and was with them through thick and thin.
4. Caring. Chuckie was probably one of the most sensitive and caring characters in the group, qualities that are often overlooked but are sometimes the most important in a persons character.
5. Unique. Chuckie stood out in his purple classes, saturn tee, and obscure green shorts. Showing us that it's ok to be a little different.
So here's to you Chuckie Finster, thanks for being you! Ya big scaredy cat.
