The other night I went to the movie "Mother!" with a friend of mine. She was the one that picked out the movie, and honestly, I went into the movie completely blind. I didn’t know what it was about or who was in it or much of anything really.
Just that it started at 7:30.
Before the movie, my friend mentioned that it was the kind of movie that didn’t make sense until the end. That made me excited because I love trying to predict and figure out the ending of movies, and I love a challenge. Long story short, I left that theater with a blown mind and a new perspective.
"Mother!" makes absolutely no sense for most of the movie. You sense a very strange atmosphere and a lot of strange things go on without explanation. Like the walls having a heartbeat, the mysterious yellow liquid the wife drinks to calm down, and the fact that no one has names in this movie. People are showing up left and right with no explanation. I spent the whole movie truly confused and trying really hard to figure out what was going on. Next thing I know everything seems to come to a close and the husband says one line and the whole movie makes sense.
The basic message that the movie was portraying was God's love and how he gave everything he has to us humans, his creations. Mother provides all of her beautiful gifts to the guests, and at first, is doing it willingly. But humans, being typical humans, were destroying the gifts she provided. They took the gifts and started to tear the house apart, claiming everything for their own.
One line that stuck with me was when one of the strangers was stealing something from Mother and says, "I have to prove I was here."
This line just shows just how selfish humans are. They are so worried about leaving their mark and proving that they were here that they take advantage of what is given to them. All of this put a pit in my stomach. This was what was happening in the real world, and that's not okay.
What I got out of the movie was a new mission. All the people that visited the house just took and took and took and left a mess of destruction. They destroyed every beautiful thing that mother provided, even when she begged them not to do that. They took everything from her. Mother Nature and God have provided the most beautiful things in this world, and I never want to take them for granted. Nature is truly an amazing thing, and us humans are destroying it. I want to reduce the harm I am causing on the planet. Whether it be simple things like recycling or making sure all trash is in the garbage, always walking if my destination is not far. Most people say those small things don't make a difference, but I believe even the smallest acts can make a huge difference.
So go outside. Look at the beauty around you. Appreciate it. It is given to you without asking for anything in return. Isn't that amazing? Why would you treat all this so poorly? Don't be like everybody else. I challenge you to love the earth and all its beautiful things. Can you do that?
