After a long wait, I got to watch "Marvel's The Defenders" on Netflix. I loved it. There were many reviews that were giving too much hate to this show but in my opinion, it didn't deserve that much. Obviously, each show will have its own set of flaws. Instead of focusing more on the bad parts, it would be good if the series was given credit for its positive aspects. I hope you get to know about the good aspects of the show (and some not-so-good ones too!)
1. It was really nice to see all of the four together.
I binged watched all four series of the individual characters. I loved each and every one of them and their series. I really wanted all of them to come together and "Defenders" gave me that. All four of them actually got together only in the second half of "Defenders," but it was still a treat to watch.
2. The villain was ruthless and wise (and unwise).
I loved how Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) played her role in the series. She was one of the founding members of the Hand, the main enemy of "Defenders." She was shown as fearless, dominating and ruthless. I actually resented her while watching the series, which is what a villain should strive to do. At the same time, her affection towards Elektra made me like her a bit too. But in the end, she was killed by Elektra and hence unwise, when she thought that there was no one to dethrone her of her position and Elektra, her student, did exactly that!
3. The sidekicks also had a substantial role in the series.
"Sidekicks" would be a wrong word to use for Nelson and Karen ("Daredevil"), Trish and Malcolm ("Jessica Jones"), Misty and Claire ("Luke Cage"), Colleen Wing ("Iron Fist"). Unlike many other TV shows where the side characters are totally ignored, these characters actually had some role to play in the series. Consider the last scene where the building was to be bombed. Colleen and Claire helped with the plan and Misty saved Claire’s life. They shared a good amount of screen time despite the fact that there were so many characters involved.
4. The series was too short.
I really wanted the series to be a bit longer. DC’s "Arrow" has about 20 episodes each season. Marvel’s shows had at least 10 to 11 episodes for "Daredevil," "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist" and "Jessica Jones." I was sort of agitated that the series got over in just a day of starting it. I waited for it too long and it was over even before I knew it. I expected that it would at least last two days.
5. The meeting was too disharmonious.
The meeting of all the four heroes took too long and when it did, everyone was fighting over who gets to save NYC. The mistrust between each of the characters was too obvious and dragged. Ultimately things smoothed out at the end and they became good friends. My only complaint is that it seemed really discontinuous that everyone was an enemy and suddenly started fighting together against a common enemy.
6. The Matt and Elektra relationship.
I don’t know which category to put this in. Did I like them together? Of course! Did I like how they fought against each other and how Daredevil tried to persuade her not to? Of course! Did I like it how the series ended? I guess, No! It was cliched. The villain turning to the good side after some efforts. I knew it would happen and it did happen. Not that I am disappointed, but it could have been a little more unique.
7. The Conclusion.
I loved the series even it was too short. The start and end of the show could have been a bit better but still, it was worth it. Watching all four of them share the screen was awesome!
