Letterboxd’s tagline is Your Life In Film. And it is just that and more. A social network based in Auckland, New Zealand, Letterboxd is dedicated exclusively to movies. It lets you track movies you have seen and when you saw them, rate and review them, create lists, keep track of what you want to watch, and stay up to date with what your friends are watching. (Among other things) It’s often considered the Goodreads of movies.
It seems like a simple concept until you consider that there is no other network like it. Before Letterboxd, I struggled to keep track of what movies I had seen, what movies I wanted to see, and everything in between. But what makes Letterboxd so great?
1. The App
Letterboxd’s app has been a long time coming, but it’s here, and it’s glorious. The app allows you to do everything that you do on the site, like track movies and add movies to your watchlist. It also makes it extremely easy if you’re looking to find movies to watch on-the-go. With Letterboxd’s new app, they’re going to be unstoppable.
2. Getting Social
Personally, the best part about Letterboxd is connecting with others who share the same taste in film as you. This opens a whole new world to discovering new movies to watch, and new views and perspectives on things that you might have already seen. It is also great for connecting with friends, staying updating on what they’ve seen, and possibly discovering common interests with people that you didn’t think you had anything in common with before.
3. Your Watchlist
Arguably, the biggest challenge of being a film fan is the sheer quantity of films out there, and keeping track of which ones you want to see. On Letterboxd, if your “Films” page is your past, then your “Watchlist” is your future. You can sort it by genre, decade, rating, film length, and even what streaming sites it’s on (Amazon, Netflix, etc.), to help you narrow down your choices when you’re trying to decide what to watch on a Tuesday night.
4. Reviews
This seems so simple, but it’s what makes the site essential. If you’re someone who watches a ton of films, you forget what exactly happened or what details you loved or hated about a film. You also think you’ll remember, but will you? Probably not. That’s what your reviews (and the site as a whole, really) is for.
5. User Experience
Letterboxd seems to really care about its users, and it is evident through the time and effort they put into every feature on the site, and the time they took into building their app. They also respond near instantly to feedback on the site and on their twitter account, @letterboxd. They are constantly asking their users for suggestions, what they want to see next, and what they would like changed.
6. It’s Just Fun
Just try it for yourself. Whether you’re super into movies, or not. It’s fun to be the movie critic.
Letterboxd has everything you need to either continue or begin your film journey. The lists, the app, the reviews, are just scratching the surface of what Letterboxd can do. So what are you waiting for? Finally experience your life in film.
