Let me go ahead and say this but for the people who are reading this and know me personally would know that I am a huge Lady Gaga fanatic and little monster. I started listening to her music when I was in middle school which I immediately became obsessed. I literally had posters and pictures of her everywhere in my room to the point that you could barely see my wall. I think every single person goes through this phase, some with bands and some with one particular person- mine is Gaga.
Now, what are more reasons that Lady Gaga is my role model? Gaga and her mom Cynthia founded a non-profit organization called the Born This Way foundation in 2012 which aims to inspire youth and build better communities. To do this task they focus on mental wellness, positive environments and most importantly: kindness. Lady Gaga also isn’t afraid to take on the issue of campus rape. Her song titled “Till It Happens to You” was a brutal wake-up call to everyone. Last year she revealed that she was raped when she was 19. “It didn’t affect me as much right after as it did about four or five years later. It hit me hard and I was traumatized by it so I was like, ‘just keep going.’ Because I just had to keep going.”
Lady Gaga says to, “live for what you create and die protecting it.” I am a musician and I have always said how much Gaga has inspired me to pursue my passion for music and writing and she is the reason I always believe in myself. Gaga inspires others not only to be creative but to take their art seriously. Who remembers the meat dress from 2010 when the media freaked out about it? She wore the meat dress not to be interpreted as a message against animal rights, but the real reason was her protest against the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and was a statement against the government's restrictions on the rights of gay soldiers in the military. Lady Gaga told Ellen DeGeneres during an interview, “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”
Lady Gaga met with President Obama in 2011 to discuss if bullying should be illegal. Obama thanked her and talked about what could change in his administration’s anti-bullying campaign. Gaga dedicated a version of her song “Hair” to Jamey Rodemeyer, who was the little monster that committed suicide after being bullied online for more than a year. “I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey.”
There are so much more reasons that I love and admire Lady Gaga. Seven years have gone by that I have been listening to her music, while she’s been around for eight years. I can almost say that I have been here since the beginning, but I almost was. I’ve never been to her shows but I’ve watched and seen almost all her performances; like I said I’m obsessed. My dream is to meet her and attend some of her concerts. I may have a chance this December when she comes to Oklahoma City. She hasn’t been to Oklahoma at all since 2010, that I know of. Oklahoma is not the place to be for concerts because many of the artists go to all the states surrounding Oklahoma instead. So, I am remaining optimistic for December with the hopes that I actually get to go to her show and I would be so happy that I would die.
