John Green, born in 1977, is an American author, director, writer, video blogger, producer, and so much more. He has single handedly made me become a better reader and more intellectual person. He gave me a reason to go to the library, check out his books, and read them cover to cover.
In one of his more renowned books, turn movie, The Fault In Our Stars, Green stole the hearts of his readers. He has the ability to use his words to take you on a journey that you never want to end. This book has been through my entire house, friend group, school, and county. We all piled into the theater to see what our favorite novel had become, and we loved it.
I owe John Green a sincere thank you for making me a reader, mainly only of his works (but I'm getting there).
In his novel, Looking for Alaska, he proved to the world the talent he possessed. He wrote, "You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present." In this quote, Green made his readers fall just as in love with his character as they did with him. Miles, the protagonist of the novel, said "Just like that. From a hundred miles an our to asleep in a nanosecond. I wanted to badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies, Not even have sex. Just sleep together, in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapse on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane." If someone told me John Green was the most quotable person in the United States, I would not be surprised.
In Paper Towns, also novel turned movie, his protagonist is taken on the journey of a lifetime. The girl he believed deserved his everlasting affection became a mystery. She had left clues and they were for him to find. I am not going to spoil it, but if you're reading this, go on Amazon right now and order this book.
The truth is, I could go on and on about John Green, his vlogs, his novels, his movies, and more...
Yet, at the end of the day, you just have to experience it for yourself.
John - if you're reading this. I adore you.
