For those of you who don't know, Gorillaz is an animated band that was created by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn. Damon writes the music and sings for the band while Jamie draw each of the members down on paper and helps to animate them for their music videos. The two use cartoons because it allows them to have versatility in their band. In their album Demon Days for example, they had a new musician for every song in the album. They use the cartoons as a way to allow them to use different musicians for each song. The unique concept allows for the animator Jamie to play around with drawing the band. Because they’re animated, the two would often make unique music videos for the band without having to worry about many limitations. A few songs you might know from their music videos would be Feel Good Inc. or Clint Eastwood to name a few.
The band is very different in terms of their style of music. The band fits into a number of genres ranging from Alternative Rock, to Electronica, to Alternative Hip Hop. Damon tries to use a number of different tools and aspects of music to tie his albums together. Plastic Beach for example, uses classical orchestra music at the beginning and the end of the album depending on which version you listen too. Another song in the album was written and produced as a collaboration between Damon Albarn, Bashy, Kano, and the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music. The song starts off with Arabic Orchestra music and slowly transforms into rap and hip hop. From there the two collide into one song where the two play at once intermixed with each other. The sound that the band produces is so odd and different that it makes them so interesting.
What is completely unbearable about being a fan of the band is how inconsistent they release music. Recently my girlfriend has been complaining about how One Direction went on break and that she isn’t getting any new music from them. I want you to understand that I have been waiting since 2010 for a new album, and 2012 for any new news about that album. The issue is that Jamie and Damon would often get into fights about the band, and as a result it was difficult for the two to work together. This results in such a long time between the release of albums. Their first album Gorillaz came out in 2001, and then their second, Demon Days in 2005. It would be an entire five years before the release of Plastic Beach in 2010, and after the release of that album we wouldn’t have any news for another two years when they dropped the song and music video DoYaThing in 2012, a collaboration between Damon, James Murphy, and Andre 3000.
