Why I Love Taylor Swift

35

Taylor Swift has been making waves since she released her first hit, “Tim McGraw.” Everyone has his or her opinion of this country-turned-pop star.  She now has four albums and, if we're lucky, she’ll be releasing a fifth one sometime in 2014. Regardless of her constantly failing relationships and her super awkward dance moves, I just cannot get enough of her. I’ve loved Taylor Swift from the start because she:

Just gets me. And by me, I mean every girl from ages 13 to 22. All of her songs are relatable, even if we sometimes don’t want to admit that we felt like we would never ever ever get back together with that one guy.

Is actually a talented songwriter. Say what you will about her voice, her dance moves or her stage presence, but her songs are actually good. She uses the right words and the right chords to make you feel like you’re in a certain moment. The girl can make you feel things.

Never pretends to be something she’s not. Her songs are about what she’s going through. If it’s a really lame break-up that ended in 28 seconds on a cell phone, she’s going to write about that. And yeah, she’ll use your name, too. Why sugarcoat it? It is what it is and she’s going to tell the world all about it.

Hasn’t gone crazy. Okay, she might be boy crazy, but at least she hasn’t gone all hair-cut-and-foam-finger-at-the-VMAs on us. She may date around, but she’s still just a quirky and honestly kind of weird 20-something trying to figure it all out.

Red. That’s really all I have to say. If you haven’t heard this album, you are hurting yourself. I’m sure you’ve heard the mainstream tracks from it, but go listen to the whole thing. It’s good. My favorites are the title track, "Red," and "All Too Well." Go watch her Grammy performance and you will understand.

Maybe that’s not a lot of reasons, but they are the important ones. I would defend Taylor Swift to the death. You can hate me for that if you want. You can tell me I’m stuck in the mindset of a 15-year-old girl who’s still waiting for that guy to send her a text about that party that might be happening if his friend’s parents are out of town. And that’s okay. Taylor’s first album came out when I was in eighth grade, so I kind of feel like we grew up together. We’re best friends, but she doesn’t know it. So Taylor haters, you can keep on hating, but we probably won't be friends. Meanwhile, I’ll keep her albums on repeat until a new one comes out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
