It’s an addiction, much like Diet Coke. I start to twitch if I don’t get my daily dose.
It's not sold on the streets, nor can you overdose on it, but it is a drug. Gossip Girl is an addiction, a lifestyle. I wish I could lie and say that I have only watched the series once, however I am on my third round and far from stopping. The story line is addicting; the characters are extraordinary. I wish I lived the lives that are portrayed in the show. From the scandal to the opulent wealth, I envy it all. The strong female leads are the main reason I keep coming back for more.
Like any girl, I see pieces of myself in Blair Waldorf. She’s the girl you would love to be, and the girl your
boyfriend would love to be with. She’s sassy, classy and manipulative. I would love to be as powerful and determined as she is. Blair
gives me hope for a better future, a future where women are successful,
respected and can still maintain personal relationships. She strikes fear
in the heart of her minions, but is adored by her family and friends.
Blair
gives the most morally sound advice I have every received. I’m not sure why I
take life advice from a TV show, but I digress. Serena is a whole different
ball game. She is what almost every girl would like to be. She shines like a ray
of light, carefree and brutally herself. So what if she went through a rough
phase. Show me someone who hasn’t slipped up once or twice and I’ll show you a
liar. She is what I picture my better half to be: slightly wild, yet adoring
and compassionate.
Serena throws herself into whatever she is doing, whether it
be a takedown or a scandalous affair (professor, married man, best friend’s
boyfriend, etc.). Homegirl is very good at keeping her priorities straight, a
trait that I really wish I had. Through Serena, I get to pretend that I am
wealthy, gorgeous and have a ton of boys lined up to date me.
Ahh, Jenny from Brooklyn. She’s the
girl we love to loathe. Little J is a scheming, lying, backstabbing girl.
However, she is admirable in some fashions. Before any of you call me crazy,
let me be the first to say that I hate her. Let me explain. Even if she is psychotic,
she has reasons. Jenny was tormented from the moment she stepped off
of the subway from Brooklyn. She was the target of multiple attacks from Blair,
Serena and the minions. Even Chuck loathed her. Through all of the attacks and
backstabbing, Serena was resilient. Never did she ever back down or give up. Hell,
she even moved to the Upper East Side to prove her determination to be part of their
world. You may despise her, but you have to give her a certain amount of
respect for all that she has put up with.
Gossip Girl is my real-life
addiction. The female leads, however awful and devious they may act, give me a
real sense of what I would like to be as a modern woman. They are resilient,
brave, unforgiving and loving. Serena and Blair may fight, but who doesn’t bicker
with their best friend? They know the real definitions of friendship, and will
go to the ends of the earth (Paris, usually) to defend that friendship. I will
forever be addicted to this show. Until the day that Netflix ceases to exist
(gasp) it will be in my “recently watched."
