OK, I admit that I used to make fun of the people that made their Facebook status' “Headphones in, world out.” Like come on, could you be any more dramatic and cliche?
Although I still find myself cringing at that quote, I’ve come to realize that it is rather spot-on. It is shocking that something as simple as an incredible song could have the ability to make someone physically beam. To me, good music is the combination of instrumentals and/or vocals that have the capability to warm your aura and make you temporarily overlook reality. When I hear a good song -- and I mean a good, striking song -- I briefly disregard where I am and what I am doing. I focus on the moment and the harmony and the melody of the song.
During my somewhat recent experiences at EDM music festivals, I’ve become inspired; not only inspired by the music, but also by the people and the culture that surround this enthusing genre. I've seen people hold up signs at these festivals with sayings like "I don't know you, but music unites us" or "If you're lost, come dance with me." And yes, I've seen my fair share of bizarre costumes and outrageous people, but these things are what make this music so enriching and more importantly, so uniting. This culture encompasses compassionate people and nothing but positive energy.
The electronic dance music culture is distinct in itself; this genre of music deserves more positive recognition and less judgmental conclusions. For me, EDM has been the leading proponent into my passion for (what I like to call) “good music.”
Anyone that has the ability to hear, can hear music. But only "good music" can make you feel something or elicit an emotion. I can’t exactly explain the physical feeling that I get when the eagerly awaited beat drops; that feeling when you glance over at the person next to you... and you nod because you both just know. For a brief moment there, music integrated you.
"Good music" embraces uniqueness in all aspects. It tackles the senses and that’s the most imperative trait to any song. "Good music" brings good feelings. It is an aura of tune. It is peacefully tumultuous.
I wish "happiness" was a worthy enough word to label the electronic dance music culture, and I wish "good music" captured the entire essence of this genre. But then again, simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. It is the glory of expression. And with that, I can confidently say that "good music" is always the answer.
