Acceptance is a feeling we all aspire to have. If you feel like you are in a place where you don’t belong, you immediately feel uncomfortable and unwanted. In the first years of college, students are exposed to many new experiences and many new kinds of people. It may take a while to find your place and the people who you relate to, but don’t worry, you will find them; the road of self-discovery can be a long one.
Drag shows provide a place for everyone no matter their sexual identity.
I had the privilege to attend my first drag show in Milwaukee this past weekend, and it was lit. Queens in their fabulous attire slayed the stage and wowed the audience with their dancing and incredible style.
The show was held at the Milwaukee Theater and provided all inclusive bathrooms, something that is finally becoming more popular in today's society. I heard a lot of positive feedback from everyone who had to make a pit stop during intermission. Why can’t we do our business next to different genders? Even though some may turn away from this idea, it is happening to universities around the country and is making a strong impact.
If you are trying to uncover characteristics of who you are or who people you want to be, I would recommend attending a drag show. Even if you are not questioning your sexuality, it is a fun environment to surround yourself with people different than you. The show helped me open my eyes to new possibilities and how to express the person I am with no fear or question.
The LGBT+ community is growing and allows everyone to be accepted into a loving environment. In a society that labels and categories, this is a perfect setting to help people find where they belong.
Drag shows are inclusive to all and can be a safe haven for many. Be warned, the drag queens eyebrows are always on fleek and their makeup is flawless. I was especially jealous of the contouring and sparkles. I have never attended such an event and I must say it was an experience I will never forget. The community is so warm and welcoming and I am thankful for the fun night out with friends. We should be able to walk out into world and be proud of who we are. The LGBT+ community is making this possible for everyone.
