A question that has been bothering me for a while now is, why don't colleges observe Veterans Day as a school holiday? We observe Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, the New Year, Christmas, and many other dates. But not Veterans Day. This is not just a plea to get an extra day off from classes, this is a plea for those who are personally impacted by Veterans Day. At LIU Post, in several of my core classes, there are students who are Veterans themselves. They should't have to fall behind on their work due to the fact it is Veterans Day.
My Late Grandfather was a veteran from the Vietnam war, and I have a close friend who is involved in Afghanistan. I truly respect all those people who have fought and are fighting in any wars. But I do not understand why colleges do nit observe this. If my Grandpa was still alive, I would be visiting him celebrating Veterans Day.
Also, one of my best friends is missing classes at LIU Post on Veterans Day due to the fact he is spending it with his Grandparents. He shouldn't be criticized or penalized for spending it with family. Nobody should fall behind, also during the Jewish holidays we have classes, which is unfair for my fellow Jewish members on campus. We shouldn't be forced to fall behind because of something that impacts our life personally because it isn't observed in college. I truly hope that one day this changes.
