I never knew that "the war on Christmas" was a thing. I'm actually pretty sure that it's made up. Like many of my fellow Starbucks drinkers though, I have noticed that on November 1 every one of the stores restocks themselves with the new red Christmas cups and an amazing selection of festive beverages. Now, I don't know about you, but I don't really put that much thought into what my paper coffee cup looks like. I just notice that it's red and hope that they spelled my name right on it. It wasn't until people on the internet starting whining that there were no snowflakes or whatever on their cups that I realized that there was anything different other than their color. Suddenly there was this explosion of people saying that the lack of snowflakes is some anti-Christian crusade against Christmas and that their holiday was being taken down by corporate pagan America.
I get it, you want a snowman on your coffee cup so that you can feel special. The thing is that I don't feel bad for you and I don't really care.
I'm Jewish. I don't celebrate Christmas because it's just not something that really has anything to do with me. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas-time. I love all the lights and the decorations, I love the festivity, and I love when the radio stations play only Christmas music. The thing is that I've learned to love these things because, if I didn't, November through December would be a really annoying time. I'm still Jewish and, as much as I love this holiday, I am completely overwhelmed for two months out of the year by an insane takeover by a holiday that I am not a part of. However, no one takes it upon themselves to throw a temper tantrum because they don't have a dreidel on the paper coffee cup that they will throw away as soon as it's empty.
Also, if you have been in a Starbucks in the past three months then you would see that they definitely do not have a problem with Christmas. Literally any Starbucks franchise in any location is currently covered head to toe in Christmas decorations. I've never felt hurt about the fact that there isn't a menorah display in the store. People let Christmas happen and every other person who goes to Starbucks seems to be able to recognize that the plain red cup was, in fact, for Christmas. Not festive, just for Christmas.
I'm not trying to offend anyone, but be level with me here. If you go to any place, anywhere, you are more than likely going to see something that is Christmas related. It's not everyone's holiday, yet you don't hear anyone else making a giant social justice cause out of it. Get over it. If it means that much to you then get a sharpie and draw Santa on your coffee cup yourself.
