Why I Decided To Rush

And I think you should too.

Why I Decided To Rush
Sorority Sugar

My decision to join a sorority was not an easy one. There are a lot of things to consider when deciding whether it's worth it for you personally. Sororities can cost quite a bit of money and they do require you to put forth some time and effort even though your school/work schedule is already pretty busy. But in my opinion, the pros far outweigh the cons. My decision to rush was one of the best decisions I've made in my life so far. Here's why I think you should rush:

1. To make new friends

You're in a new town at a college where you don't know anyone. You might know your roommates and a few people from high school that chose the same college as you, but it's a good idea to branch out. Rushing is a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friendships. You can never have too many friends. Or Instagram followers.

2. To get involved on campus.

There's like a million events on campus that you didn't even know about. When you're a part of Greek Life, you find out about all of them. Some of these events are optional to attend, some are mandatory for your chapter but either way they are usually pretty fun and a great way to fully get the college experience.

3. To have a family away from your family.

You have a big and a grandbig, maybe a twin. Then you get a little and a grandlittle. You actually get a little family. Even beyond your bigs and littles, all the girls in the sorority are your sisters. It all sounds really cheesy, but it's awesome to have a little family with you at school

4. Philanthropy

Philanthropy is such an important part of Greek Life. It's one of my favorite parts of my sorority and my particular sorority's philanthropy (breast cancer education and awareness) had a huge impact on my decision to choose ZTA. A few people I know and care about have breast cancer and it makes me so proud to be a part of a sorority that is doing something about it.

5. It looks good on your resume.

We're all in college for the same reason, to get a job after we graduate. It's pretty competitive in the job world out there, so anything extra that can be added to your resume is a big plus. The philanthropy side of Greek Life gives a positive effect on your chances of getting the job.

6. To get out of my comfort zone.

A lot of people were surprised when I joined a sorority, because I'm not exactly what you call the "sorority type." I'm shy, a little awkward, and I don't party (a lot of sorority girls actually don't party btw). Joining a sorority has helped me to get over my shyness and my insecurities. It gets me to talk to people I maybe wouldn't normally talk to and to have more confidence in myself.

7. There's a lot of cute pics and t-shirts.

Not the best reason to rush, but it's still a big plus in joining a sorority. We have events, formals, and socials and we make a different cute t-shirt for every one. Also, at these events and socials we take lots of pictures and they almost always turn out adorable. Just look at our recruitment videos.

8. To get a sense of belonging.

When I decided to rush, I had heard all these girls saying "I found my home away from home," "I found the place where I belong," etc. I figured they were being dramatic. Could I really feel at home and like I belonged there in a sorority? I was definitely on the fence when I first joined, but it's amazing how "at home" you really feel. It doesn't make me miss my "real home" any less, but it does make being here at school so much better. I feel like I'm where I'm supposed to be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
