When I left home two years ago to come to Milligan College, Tenn., I thought I was making a huge mistake. It is six hours away from comfort, security and family. I was scared to death. Now that I'm a junior and I'm halfway done, I can tell you the 11 reasons why going to a school far from home makes the college experience even better.
1. You get to experience different landscapes.
I never knew I loved mountains until I moved to Tennessee.
2. You learn that you really can make it on your own.
There's no driving home when you've had a rough day or you need help, and that's OK.
3. You get the best of both worlds.
You have your home life, which is familiar and comfortable. Then you get to go to your other life; where there are new and exciting experiences.
4. You have more job opportunities.
Going to school, getting jobs and interning in a new area allows you to network and have another potential career location.
5. You get to experience new perspectives.
Wherever you are, there are people you’ve never met before with cultures you’ve never seen before. Embrace it.
6. You learn that it's possible to find home somewhere else.
While it may seem like you could never call another place home; you'll quickly learn that you can make home anywhere you choose.
7. You'll travel more.
Traveling long distances makes you realize that you're capable of driving long distances and makes you more likely to travel places since that distance won't seem so long anymore.
8. You're forced to find a new normal.
While it may seem like college would do this anyway, being far from home makes you find a new church, a new nail salon and a new hideaway.
9. It'll make you appreciate home more.
Not being able to go home frequently will make you appreciate the advantages of being at home.
10. It's an immersion experience.
While you don't have the free laundry option like locals do, you're more likely to commit and find where you belong.
11. You know that no matter what, you can always call home.
Before you know it, you'll be making the long trek back home once again.
