When I first started writing for Odyssey in April, not many people knew what it was or why it is important. Most people just thought it was a "blog."
I was at a time in my life where I needed a leadership role. I needed to be a part of something greater than myself. I quickly got online and googled how to apply to write for Odyssey. It was a quick process and I was hired as the EIC for our community. But the question you might be wondering is "why?" My why is easy. I needed my voice to be heard.
Odyssey allows individuals to share their voice on a platform that is way greater than themselves. It allows people to share a story and help others in need. This is what I was searching for. I was searching for something that could give me that extra boost of confidence when I needed it. I was searching for that something that would allow me to help others or let them know they aren't alone.
I've written several articles from April until now. I've written articles that have gotten two shares and I've written articles that have gotten over 500 shares. I've written articles that I thought nobody would share and they ended up getting tons of shares and views. I've written articles that I thought would get several shares and they literally got one share. I've received hate and I've received love. I've gained friends and I've gained enemies.
Sometimes being a part of something greater than yourself is hard, but it is always rewarding. There have been times that I've wanted to throw my hands up in the air because people were so hurtful, but during those times I thought about those that have reached out to me and told me how much my article helped them, and that is why I decide to stay.
There are times when I think my voice doesn't matter, but then there are times when I think my voice is so powerful I could change the world. You see, I choose to be a part of Odyssey because it is worth it. I choose to continue writing for them because I matter and so does my voice.
For those who don't understand Odyssey or hate people who write for them, I have news for you: our voices are being heard and our stories are being told. Is yours?
