Sometimes I think to myself, "I actually live here". It's hard to believe I am living and breathing in one of the most beautiful cities in the country. It is a great location for me to be in as a college student, on my own for the first time and discovering who I want to be. Below are the primary reasons why I chose the College of Charleston to further my education and growth as a person.
1. Things to do
Because C of C is in a major city, there are so many fun things to do on the weekends other than getting ~turnt~. When choosing a college, this was an important factor for me because I'm not the kind of person that blacks out for fun. I love that every Saturday the city puts on a farmers market in Marion Square and has Second Sundays on King Street. Not only are there events, but there are so many great restaurants and coffee shops that are fun to try, as well as the beautiful and historic areas of the city to see. AND you can't forget the beaches, including Folly, Sullivan's, and Isle of Palms, all of which are a short drive away.
2. The weather
Although there have been problems with hurricanes and flooding, the weather in Charleston is great for anyone who loves sunshine and warmth. The summer can be dreadfully hot, but that is what the AC is for. The fall and winter are the best times of the year because unlike many parts of the US where snow and freezing temperatures are depressing, I am able to walk outside and enjoy myself.
3. The opportunities
Being in the Honors College, and even the College in general, I am given cool opportunities to choose from. The College is a Liberal Arts school, which yes, has its downsides, allows me to explore what I like and don't like. Eventually, I will be able to focus on my major and take some interesting courses. There are some wonderful professors and several other resources that work to help students like me find internships, research, or study abroad opportunities. It also helps that the College is closely tied to MUSC and other organizations within the city.
4. The diversity
The town I attended high school was, unfortunately, not very diverse or exciting in any way (just being honest). It is nice being in a city where I can be myself and can see the uniqueness in people around me.
5. My family
I'm not sure what I would do without my grandparents living thirty minutes away in Mount Pleasant. Every once in a while, I need to see family and get a break from school. I also don't know what I would do without the support of my parents and their ability to travel to Charleston. I wouldn't be here without them and am grateful they love this area as much as I do. They even want to move down here when possible.
Charleston is just an all-around amazing place to be.
