Creating luck out of thin air

Superstition, a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief

Let me begin by saying I do not believe in superstitions. In fact, I believe superstition is the most pointless thing on the planet. I know religious people, I know non-religious people and I can tell you 80% or more of those people believe in their superstitions more than any other religion. I have come to ask why? What is this external force that has brainwashed you into doing particular things for "good luck" or "for your own safety"? Should we consider creating superstition into a religion? It seems there would certainly be enough followers.

It is safe to say there are some illogical and extremely strange superstitions. When asking a friend about some of hers, she replied, "I have to flip my hair 16 times once I get out of the shower. But then I started to freak myself out that I was flipping it so many times and changed it to only odd numbers". Huh? I asked someone else about their superstitions and he responded, "for golf I use one putter, but if that doesn't give me good luck I go to my alternate and then after 2 puts, it's not working, I switch back to the first one". Again, Huh?

Athletes are commonly superstitious. It can be anything; a lucky hairdo, a lucky hair tie, a lucky pair of spandex, a lucky saying, the list could go on forever. If they play well, they give the credit not only to themselves but to their superstitious acts. How on earth does a hair tie help you win a national championship? It doesn't.

What is comes down to is being comfortable in our own skin. Whether you are an athlete, performer, or an average joe, creating these superstitions only weakens you. You should believe you can win a championship because you and your team have worked your butts off, you should believe you won a Grammy because you creating something spectacular, should believe you can get out of that shower with one hair flip because you have hairdryers to do the rest! Sure it's nice to have that lucky charm, but will your world go crashing down if you don't?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
