So the first "Captain America: Civil War" trailer came out over Thanksgiving break, and having had a few weeks to process it (and break it down frame by frame) I have finally come up with a list of why everyone needs to agree with Captain America and not Iron Man.
Sure, Iron Man is great and provides all the cool toys for the Avengers, but let’s be real, he hasn’t made the best decisions for humanity (looking at you, Ultron). The heroes at face value may be taking sides on whether or not they should let the government step in and control them, but we all know this argument is rooted in the emotional ties to Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier. Bucky is Cap’s best friend, and Bucky is (potentially) the man who killed Tony’s parents. We will all need to choose a side come May 6, but just make sure it’s the right one (AKA Captain America’s). And here’s why:
He’s Protecting Bucky
Captain America is protecting his innocent best friend. Plain and simple. He knows that people won’t believe Bucky didn’t blow up the building because of his past as the Winter Soldier, so he is simply trying to give him a fighting chance when the government starts chasing him down to arrest him for a crime he didn’t commit. Wouldn’t we all do that if our childhood best friend was being accused of something they didn’t do?
Limitations are Stupid
Tony has a line in the trailer where he says “If we can’t accept limitations, then we’re no better than the bad guys” which isn’t just stupid, it’s flat out wrong. Having limitations doesn’t mean you are a good guy! What matters is what you are using your powers for, and Captain America is clearly always using them for good.
Tony is Operating Out of Emotion (probably…)
It was implied that Bucky, AKA the Winter Soldier, killed Tony’s parents in the previous "Captain America" film, and if that ends up being true, then I think it is safe to say that Tony might be operating a little bit out of emotion, while Cap is trying to protect Bucky. But Bucky was brainwashed by Hydra and was clearly not himself when he was hired to do those things. Obviously, I’m not expecting or even saying that Tony should forgive him, but he should at least understand the power of brainwashing and be able to leave Bucky alone.
You can’t trust the General from the Hulk
Any time that guy pops up, it’s always bad news. He created the Hulk for the sole purpose of making him into a weapon! Then he put a bunch of innocent lives at risk just trying to chase him down (to weaponize him, again) when if he just left him alone, odds are, the Hulk would never emerge. So even if I can’t say for certain what his involvement will be in the movie, why would you trust him? Especially Tony, who’s science bros with Bruce Banner; wouldn’t Bruce say to him that “Hey Tony, this guy is no good. Don’t trust to him.”
Hasn’t Cap Proven Himself Already?
We’re talking about Captain America here! He wouldn’t let the giant floating city in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" blow up to save the whole world because there were innocent civilians still on the crater. He clearly isn’t about putting innocent lives at risk, even if it is for the greater good ,so if he’s protecting Bucky, shouldn’t Tony trust that Bucky probably isn’t a killer anymore?
In conclusion, Captain America's side is clearly the right side to choose. I think that Tony is operating out of emotion, which, I will admit, if someone kills your parents, it’s probably hard not to, but going after him on a personal vendetta and using the super hero registration act as an excuse isn’t right. But whatever side you choose, we can rest easily knowing that this will probably be an awesome movie. If you need confirmation that it will be, just look at this last trailer shot.
