With a name like that, you'd think he'd be more famous, but many Americans caught wind of him through a viral town hall video. The U.S. representative was asked what he thought about the act of kneeling during the anthem and responded in such an eloquent way that even Ellen DeGeneres couldn't ignore it.
In the most respectful way possible, O'Rourke replied that kneeling was the most patriotic thing you could do, following a long history of America's nonviolent protests. His response was punctuated with highly accurate facts taken from "Parting the Waters: America in the King Years" by Taylor Branch.
If you aren't impressed by his poised response, his credentials could blow you away.
O'Rourke believes in providing accessible healthcare to all, job security for Texans, and that "immigrants are seen as a critical source of strength and security" in America.
He believes in big companies returning investments to small communities. He believes in increased educational funding for low-income communities. He believes in the Equality Act and ensuring same-sex couples are guaranteed the same federal benefits as others.
What makes him special is his recognition that every person should be treated equally, regardless of their identity or race. His answer to the question that seems to plague America holds a double meaning in that he not only understands the historical intentions of the NFL protest but also the racial meaning.
He understands a concept that many White Americans struggle to understand: The protest isn't protesting patriotism and what the troops have sacrificed, it's protesting the violent and social inequality that Black people face in their own country when equality is supposed to be for all.
O'Rourke understands that the only disrespect associated with the NFL protests is that those who believe in it are called "son of a bitch[es]" and often lose their job and the livelihood.
What he recognizes as important is essentially what the protest is trying to do: get the country looking at the way Black lives are viewed in America. Black men, women, and children are being violently murdered at alarming rates in America and the NFL protests serve to bring attention to the issue. It mirrors the Civil Rights movement, and having a politician that completely understands the intentions of the movement and speaks out on it creates an incredible platform for the movement.
One thing that is alarming about O'Rourke is his young face. At a ripe age of 45, the Texan has only just started graying and is creating a legacy for his three young children. I think it further speaks on his intelligence and ability to represent Texas in Congress. As our politicians and social leaders become younger and younger, more progressive bills are passed and the spotlight is constantly shown on bettering the future for America. We've seen in the Parkland survivors that change is incredibly effective at the hands of a younger generation and O'Rourke is yet another example.
Texas, put O'Rourke in Senate. Not every state can be so lucky to have representation like Beto.
