When you’re over the delightful tackiness of the giant fiberglass Boots and Hat on a weekend afternoon in Georgetown, there are plenty of places to get a great breakfast-for-lunch experience along the main strip. These are a few of my favorites:
1. Smarty Pants
With its concrete floor, dark interior and endless motorcycle racing on the TV’s over the bar, Smarty Pants’ sport-biker vibe lends itself well to their menu of hearty, heavy brunch and sandwich options. There is an array of cheesy, spicy Tex-Mex options, including massive breakfast burritos and omelettes, and sandwiches on thick, toasted French bread and hoagie rolls. Like most places in Georgetown, everything can become a vegetarian choice with a Field Roast substitution.
Speaking of vegetarian options, for the vegans out there, GLC is an excellent choice for a large menu of tasty wraps, sandwiches, nachos and more. Everything offered is vegetarian, and can be vegan as well if ordered with soy cheese instead of the “real thing.” Each dish has a fun-yet-cringeworthy nerdy name, like the Wrap of Kahn (a fajita wrap made with Field Roast “steak” that is absolutely delicious) and Leia’s Tacos (no comment on that one). They also have old-school monitors and vintage Nintendo systems and cartridges so you can game your way through the wait for your food while you sip your Bloody Mary or coffee served in a Darth Vader mug.
For a more traditional diner experience, The Square Knot is perfect. With a straightforward breakfast menu served (nearly) all day, it’s a great local alternative to the Denny’s in SODO, and less competition for seats with the stadium game-day crowds. The servers are friendly, fast and love to talk with their regulars, and the overall atmosphere is inviting, casual and devoid of pretension. It’s great place to get a quick plate of all the classic basics, plus four choices of juices for your mimosa.
If fresh cilantro and and chorizo are more your speed, Fonda La Catrina has an impressive brunch menu on the weekends. Their Pan Dulce (a Latin-inspired spin on French toast) and Huevos Revueltos (“scrambled eggs”) on tortillas with onions, beans, cilantro and your choice of sauce are must-tries, along with any dish featuring their chorizo.
