When you bring your new boyfriend or girlfriend home to meet the family for the first time, it is a big step. It is either a game-changer or a game-booster. Things either get so much better and you become significantly closer to each other or…they start to look at you like you have five different eyes and ignore you when they see you on campus. The best movie to ever describe this amazingly, painful, yet very important moment in your history is…wait for it…drum roll please…"Mean Girls." That’s right. The one with pre-drug addicted Lindsay Lohan and cool mom Amy Poehler and daughter of the Toaster Struddle-maker Lacey Chabert.
1. The first moment you walk in the door and your whole family is there waiting showing your significant other with secret information.
2. That moment when your family is trying extremely hard to impress them and it is just embarrassing.
3. Or when the family starts telling the stories from your childhood and you wish they would just shut up.
4. When you pass people from high school that thought you would die single and alone, but you now are holding the hands of someone besides your best friend.
5. Your significant other seeing your house for the first time and either being impressed or at least faking it.
6. When you are trying to find fun things to take them to do and show them around.
7. Your parents putting you in completely different sides of the house with their room in between. Like come on, we are in college.
8. When your siblings show up and try to embarrass you on a date and you just act like you don't know them.
9. When the “popular” girl from high school tries to steal your significant other.
10. When you survive the weekend and you’re still with your significant other.
The adventure of meeting your mom, your crazy grandma or your grumpy old grandpa is something that you dread and try to put off as much as physically possible. And after the weekend, you learn how much your family means to you and how much you mean to them. So, peace and blessings on your hometown date! We all know that we need it on this adventure that will either make or break your relationship. It is the true test of the relationship and of love.
