I had lobster the other night for dinner. Now, you’re probably thinking one of two things: Wow, how can you as a broke college student afford such delectable dining? Or, wow you treated yourself to such a fancy meal?
Well, the answer to the first question is I can’t. Update: I’m still a broke college student, so if you know how to fix that, let me know. To the second question: Elon University treated me to this fancy meal. Lakeside Dining hall to be exact.
If you’re an Elon alum, you may be appalled at this statement, and your first question may be, “was the meat raw?” No, it actually wasn’t. Elon alumni may remember this dining hall as the one that didn’t do so hot on its sanitation rating a few years back, getting a score lower than Cookout (which in no way am I dissing Cookout. I love that establishment). They may remember Lakeside as the dining hall that got called out for raw meat. Well, not anymore.
We walked out of the dining hall looking like we’d just won the lottery. Mouths gapped open at the very sight of our to-go boxes stuffed with lobster, shrimp, quinoa and tiramisu. Because I’m basic, I had to document this moment of food greatness. Since it was so out of the ordinary to have such fancy food, a lot of people responded to my snap chat, some asking who important visited Elon that they put out such great food.
Well, that’s just it. No one did. Lakeside and dining services -- in general -- is just stepping up their game. The only problem with this? It’s practically too late, for me that is. You see, I’m a senior who doesn’t have an all-access meal plan anymore, so I’d have to pay real money to get into dining halls. Luckily, I borrowed some swipes from underclassmen, one of them being on lobster night at Lakeside.
Now, I was one of the lucky upperclassmen who was fortunate enough to use a swipe for free. But, what about those poor seniors without a meal plan at all? Those poor seniors who still remember when McEwen’s fried chicken and mac and cheese Thursdays use to be the talk of the town. Those poor seniors who have to fend for themselves, buying and cooking their own food while, meanwhile, people are waltzing out of Lakeside with gourmet meals.
Congrats, freshmen. You’ve entered a new in Elon Dining. You’ve entered a new, delicious era of fancy food at Elon.
