Since we're a few weeks into the semester, I figured I'd update you with some of the new and exciting things happening in The Odyssey.
Open submission. Have you ever wanted to write an article but didn't want to be a regular staff member? Now you can contribute to The Odyssey with our new open submission link! Think of it as our paper's "letter to the editor." If you log onto our website, theodysseyonline.com, you'll see it on the top of the homepage. This is a great opportunity to have your voice heard and have your work seen by thousands - not even kidding, thousands. The best part? Even though we're a publication geared toward Greek students, you don't actually have to be in Greek life to send an open submission - so tell your friends!
GIFs in online articles/general online presence. We all love GIFs embedded in online articles. Now they're a part of The Odyssey's website! It's awesome to have a physical paper delivered to your house each week, but one of our big goals this semester is to expand our online presence. All the articles you see in the print edition are also online, plus you'll see articles that are only online! Our campus-specific website is theodysseyonline.com/indiana. We have great writers on staff who would really appreciate seeing their work shared on the web. On that note...
Social media. Did you know that The Odyssey is on Facebook and Twitter? Well, we are and we would love more followers! The Facebook page is "The Odyssey at Indiana University" and our Twitter handle is @OdysseyatIU. We share all your friends' articles as well as great articles from other campuses across the country! Our fabulous social media directors, Julie Konners and Sophie Babcock, are working on some fun contests, so hit "like" and "follow"! Seriously, do it. You won't regret it, I promise.
Breaking news. While The Odyssey isn't strictly a news source, we do serve to inform the Greek community. When something happens in our community, we want to let you know as soon as we can. This is where our social media and website become even more important, because you won't see those articles in print. I'm very excited that we're working on more timely news coverage this semester. Of course we're not all serious at The Odyssey. We have a variety of funny and entertaining articles each week, and we'll keeping bringing those to you too!
Do you have any suggestions to make The Odyssey - in print, online and on social media - even better? Please don't hesitate to reach out to me. My email is aischor@indiana.edu and I would love to get anyone who wants to be involved with this publication!
