After watching Halsey, a 23-year-old singer, read her poem to a crowd in New York City, I was moved by her story and her message. I believe sexual assault is a topic a lot of people try to avoid, until maybe more recently. But, even still, it is hard to discuss.
Halsey went into detail and makes important points in her poem, "A Story Like Mine," that many people may not really think of, since it's not something people give too much thought. It's definitely a sad and sensitive subject; so I realize this is not the most uplifting article to read.
I hope that her poem moves you like it moved me.
"It's 2009 and I'm 14 and I'm crying"
Victims of sexual assault have no age limit. Just because you may think someone is too young or too old, does not mean they have not experienced it and may not experience it more than once.
Also, people who have witnessed sexual assault can be scarred from that experience.
"So love your neighbor, please treat her kindly"
Just because you do not understand why someone would not speak up about their incident does not mean you should shame them. After all, it is THEIR private life. Be there to listen.
"And her parents would, like, totally kill her"
Sometimes victims blame themselves or believe others would blame them for what someone else has done.
"I believe I'm protected 'cause I live on a screen
Nobody would dare act that way around me
I've earned my protection, eternally clean
Until a man that I trust gets his hands in my pants
But I don't want none of that, I just wanted to dance"
Fame does not protect people from sexual assault. Anyone of any race, class, gender, and religion is at risk.
"And every friend that I know has a story like mine"
More people than you probably would guess are victims of sexual assault. Take a moment to think before you talk about sexual assault with a friend because it is a sensitive topic. You may not know what he/or she has been through.
"Remind me this is the beginning, it is not the finale"
The #MeToo campaign, Women's March, and Hollywood's initiative to stop sexual harassment are all just the beginning of this movement.
"Be a voice for all those who have prisoner's tongues
For the people who had to grow up way too young
There is work to be done
There are songs to be sung
Lord knows there's a war to be won"
I found the last part of Halsey's poem to be very powerful and it made me feel hopeful. I hope that all people soon acknowledge this as an important movement.
