What You Can Do To Help Ecuador

We need to take care of our planet, we need to take care of each other.

Whenever something terrible happens in the world, like natural disasters or mass shootings, my heart hurts. It hurts because I feel helpless; I feel like there is nothing I can do to help the innocent humans who are affected. When I heard about the earthquake in Ecuador, there was a burden on my heart that could not be contained.

For those that don’t know, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 and hit Ecuador on April 16. The death toll, sadly, is at least 570. More than 150 people are counted as missing, and there are over 7,000 people injured. There have been 23 earthquakes since then, affecting Ecuador and relief efforts. This has been the deadliest earthquake to hit Ecuador since 1987.

So what can we do as broke college students to help third world countries in need?

Unicef, Care, and the Ecuadorian Red Cross are just a few that you can donate to help. Most of them start with a donation of $50, but don’t worry, you’re able to enter an amount that works for you. I’m sure all of us have a couple dollars to spare to be able to give money to relief efforts for Ecuador.

One of the common misconceptions of our generation is that people don’t see us as generous or caring about what is going on in the world. By donating or finding ways to help the relief, you are defying that standard that people have put upon us.

Don’t stand around and watch what is going on in the world. Go out and help. Just by donating you are helping so many people. There are over 25,000 people in shelters in Ecuador. They are lost, homeless, scared.

We have the power to do good for the world. Don’t wait around for someone else to save it, do it yourself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
