The new “Wonder Woman” movie is out and is killing the game so far with ratings of about 8.4/10, as provided by IMDb. It is amazing to see a female superhero movie in theatres and it honestly makes me wonder how different I would be as a person had I seen more movies that had women playing badass roles. As a young girl who thoroughly enjoyed (and still does enjoy) superhero movies and comics, I would have liked to see one that had a female lead. Besides that, I am so glad that people today, young or old get a chance to see this movie. Seeing a female lead shows that not only are women strong and independent but it also allows for young girls to see that you do not need a man to be amazing or beautiful, you give yourself that gratification.
Personally, every time I leave any action movie, whether it be “The Avengers,” “The Fast and the Furious,” “Suicide Squad,” et cetera, I feel not only like I want to take some fighting classes, but I feel like I can do anything. If girls had more movies with a female lead, who act opposite to the norm, it would help create the idea for young girls that they can do anything. Especially during a point in time where self-esteem for many young girls is at a low, it would help to see that women can be strong and independent. In a society where we are still stepping away from the idea that to be a strong woman, you need a man, it is extremely beneficial for people, especially young girls, to see that to be a strong, independent women, you need not only yourself but to believe in yourself.
While “Wonder Woman” is doing so well, it was not expected from all fronts. Earlier in the year, people suspected that the movie was not being promoted as much as other superhero movies would have been. The main cause of suspicion? The fact that “Wonder Woman” not only has a female lead but a female director as well. Some felt that there were certain promotions, like the General Mills cereal boxes for “Batman V. Superman,” that weren't done for “Wonder Woman.” Others agreed with the research which shows that around 400,000 more dollars were spent promoting “Wonder Woman” than “Suicide Squad.” While it was a debate that never ended, the movie is out and is doing amazing in theatres.
Everyone go see it if you get the chance and remember to always teach those younger than us to believe in themselves.
