The transition from high school to college was harder than it seems. There are many things I wish I could've told myself before going into college. So for those of you that are incoming freshman, here's a word of advice:
1. It's ok to be nervous.
Every freshman is on the same boat as you are. Everyone is nervous, even if they don't say they are. Its okay if you're nervous in a new situation. Things will seem normal very shortly.
2. Not everyone you meet will be your friend.
Don't expect to be friends with everyone. It's tricky trying to make new friends and in the beginning you try to be friendly with everyone. You're all just trying to find people but not everyone will end up being your friend.
3. Not all your friends will stick around.
That's perfectly OK. At the beginning, you're all in a vulnerable stage trying to make friends quickly and those friends will fade when you find your real friends. Often, especially after the first semester, some friends might realize your school is not the school for them. It's hard when your friends transfer, but don't worry--true friends will always keep in touch.
4. Get involved.
This seems so cliche, but its totally true! The best way to make friends fast is to get involved in campus activities. You can find friends with similar interests as you this way. There's a lot to do in college, don't spend your day in bed.
5. Go out.
If drinking is not your thing, you can still go out and have fun! Once you find your group you should go out once in a while. Have some fun. All work no play is definitely not good for you. Make some crazy college memories.
6. You should skip that house party to study for your quiz.
I've heard countless times "You can retake a class, but you can never relive a good party." Ridiculous. Remember why you're in college in the first place. Prioritize. Getting good grades is a better feeling than a Sunday morning hangover.
7. Do your laundry.
It's annoying and tedious and reminds you that you have responsibilities and you're that much closer to being an adult. But, don't let your dirty clothes fester in your hamper.
8. Watch how you spend your money.
Seems like every time I check my bank account it said $0.43. I have no idea what I even spent my money on. Learn how to use your money conservatively.
9. Watch what you eat.
I get that the dining hall sucks and the only food you have in your room is Easy Mac, but that freshman 15 is really real. Be cautious of what you put into your body. Mozzarella sticks 7 days of the week--not a good idea.
10. It's OK to miss an 8 a.m.
Now, I would normally not advise missing classes, but its ok to miss one. Don't over work yourself trying to make every single class every day. That one 8 a.m. that you hate--take a day off. It won't kill you.
