10 Vital Things to Bring to a Fraternity Mountain Weekend

You don't need that hair straightener.

Oh, the debauchery that is mountain weekend. While the activities that happen at mountain weekend are typically the same as what happens on a typical weekend at school, they occur in the mountains and theres usually hot tubs which make it way more fun. While I am by no means an expert on this topic, I have been on a few mountain weekends. Before I attended my first mountain getaway, I was completely confused on what to bring. I looked up what I should bring and the articles all seemed to be outdated. I remembered thinking to myself that I needed to write somewhat of an update to these articles so that I can help those who had the same concerns as me. Quit your worrying and get packing!

Cooler

Whether or not you choose to paint a cooler for your date is up to you (and your date.) However, between the two of you, one of you should bring a cooler. There will most likely be a fridge at the house. However, the fridge fills up very quickly when roughly thirty people are putting three days worth of food in one fridge. Bringing a cooler will just ease your mind in knowing that your food will be fine no matter what.

Food

GO! GROCERY SHOPPING! BEFORE! I cannot stress this point enough. There most likely won't be a grocery store on the side of this mountain you'll be staying on and you won't know how far away the closes one will be. On my first mountain weekend, the closes grocery store was 40 minutes away. Additionally, don't trust the boys to feed you. I would suggest making a list with your date on what you would eat for the weekend so that you don't bring too much food and that you ensure that you will have nutrition for the entire weekend. Snacks couldn't hurt either.

Boots/Tennis shoes

I don't know if it's just me but every mountain weekend I have been on has been rainy. Bringing shoes that can deal with the rain is essential.

Bathing suit

The houses at mountain weekends normally have 1-2 hot tubs in them. Forgetting your bathing suit wouldn't ruin the whole weekend but it would suck having to stay inside when everyone else is out on the porch.

Sweaters/sweatshirts

It's the mountains. It is most likely going to be cold. Layering is essential as you switch from different environmental conditions. Additionally, sweaters are just the fashion of the area.

Leggings

Feel free to dress up however you want. However, your comfort for this weekend is more important than dressing up. But you do you.

Phone charger

Need I say more?

Minimal makeup

Again, you do you. Mountain weekend is just such a casual environment. No one tends to get fancy this weekend. Additionally, you don't want to spend a lot of time getting ready. You would rather just get to the fun. I bring mascara and concealer so that I don't look dead in pictures but nothing other than that.

Towel

Most of the time there are bath towels provided in the house. I don't know if it's just me but I did not want to use the same towel getting out of the shower as I did getting out of the hot tub. If you're anything like me, bringing an extra towel will be worth your while.

A good attitude

This weekend is going to be so much fun. Regardless of if your date is a random setup or you're going with your significant other of years, there will be so many memories made over the weekend. If one person in the house has a bad attitude or is in a bad mood, the whole house can tell. By having a good attitude, you will make the weekend so much more fun for not only everyone around you but for yourself as well.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
