What The Crocodile Hunter Taught Me
Bindi Irwin

Steve Irwin is one of my favorite people and has had a major impact on my life. Even though he has passed, his spirit and his positive impact on the world lives on every day. The way he lived his life was an inspiration. He was an inspiration. He has taught me many important lessons that I carry with me throughout my life. Here are a few:

Follow your dreams

Whether it be wildlife, teaching, music, law, or making coffee, follow that dream. Do what you are passionate about and go all in. Steve knew exactly what he wanted to do and he went with it.

From a very young age, he knew he had a passion for wildlife. At the age of 6, he caught his first (venomous) snake. SIX. He never stopped chasing that passion he had to learn about animals and to take care of them.

Speaking of passion and knowing what you want, click hereto watch an incredibly adorable video of how Steve and his wife Terri met.

Know your purpose

The Crocodile Hunter knew his purpose and it is why he was so driven to follow his passion to the ends of the earth. He flat out said in an interview, “The reason I’ve been put on this planet is to save wildlife.”

Share your passions with others

My favorite thing about Steve Irwin is that simply chasing his passion wasn’t enough. He had to share it with the world. He had to make other people passionate about wildlife. He taught me that if you get fired up about what you love, people will listen and they will be inspired by you. When I think of the word passion, Steve Irwin is the first person who comes to mind.

“Come with me, share it with me, share my wildlife with me, because humans want to save things that they love.”
-Steve Irwin

Be yourself

Steve Irwin was so enthusiastic about his job and about his life that is was difficult for a lot of people to believe it was authentic. Watching from the screen, it is easy to assume that it was all an act, but many that knew Steve have said that he is the most sincere and authentic person they have ever met.

Steve knew that there were people who could not fathom that a person could actually be this enthusiastic about life and he had something to say about it:

“Some people would like to call me an actor. HA! I don’t think so! All I gotta do is go out there and do this, ey, just be me.”

If there is anything I have learned from him, it’s to be completely yourself and you will probably have a lot of fun with it.

Leave a legacy

When Steve suddenly passed, the whole world felt it. That day we lost a truly incredible man and wildlife activist, but he left us the most beautiful legacy.

His wife Terri, daughter Bindi, and son Robert all strive to continue the work that he started. They continue to make a difference in the world and have an impact on wildlife.

His family inspires and educate so many people. The way they honor Steve and his memory in their everyday life is so beautiful.

“For us, dad kind of lives with us every single day; and I think that, as a family, his spirit and his legacy is carried on in our own hearts and we work every single day to make sure that his message is remembered forever.”
-Bindi Irwin

Although Steve Irwin has had a great impact on my life, I can't even begin to scratch the surface of the impact that he made and continues to make in this world.

We will always remember him as our beloved Crocodile Hunter and the number one wildlife warrior, but he was so much more to so many people, as well as animals. I would like to leave you all with a challenge today:

Be the Steve Irwin of whatever you do.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
