Purpose. No, I'm not talking about a kind of aquatic mammal. I'm talking about the reason we're here. The reasons we make for ourselves to get up in the morning and go about our day. The reasons we feel the need to continue on and push forward when we're stuck in some less than favorable lapses of time.
Some days you can sit and wonder why exactly you're here for hours. It can nag at the back of your mind and torment you despite every mundane activity you try to distract yourself with. Maybe the thought has never even crossed your mind. Why are we here? Why are you here? Why am I here? What is it we're meant to do?
This unfortunate string of inquisitions and quandaries is both daunting and frustrating, for, as I probably don't have to put it so frankly, there is no perfect answer.
Some find purpose in routine. Waking up at the same time everyday, eating the same breakfast, working out at the same time, getting ready for bed in the same way gives a sense of accomplishment. Individuals who find purpose in routine can sometimes feel that the things they do have a sort of power, as if, subconsciously, they somehow know that the things they do regularly keep misfortune at bay. If something goes wrong, or the individual does in fact have a bad day, that means something in their routine has gone astray. Almost instantaneously, the individual searches through and recants every motion they've made throughout the day
Some find purpose in their work or a cause. The work or cause, they feel, truly makes a difference in something they believe in. Welfare of others, the environment, other living creatures that share the earth with us. This reason has been justified by the individual in such a sense that a rather large portion of their lives is spent supporting it.
Some find solace in religion. Guidelines and rules denoted by the religion provide a moral compass in decisions made throughout life and paths taken. It provides comfort, and a closer explanation to why we are all here; possibly why the individual is here and should continue to be.
Some find purpose in others. They feel as though their relationships with others define their purpose. These relationships give them a sense of importance; a reason to stick around.
So take a few moments. Think about it. Why are we here? Why are you here? Why am I here? Don't drive yourself nuts thinking about it. There's no wildly wrong answer. And it's not the important part. You see, finding a purpose keeps us going, it gives us the reason we need to keep going. So find it. Find them. Find all of the reasons you can possibly think of to keep going and make most of your life relevant to the things you believe in most.
