6 Inappropriate Things You Should Never Say To A Sister Of A Lesbian — From A Dedicated Christian

I am a Christian, I go to church, I attended a Christian college, and I have given my life to Jesus. I also have a lesbian sister, and I am completely supportive of her and everyone else. The following are real things that have been said to or asked to me and are totally inappropriate.

1. How can you love her if she is sinning?

Well, she is my sister so loving her isn't even a question. If the Bible is called into play, Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

2. She is going to Hell/ She is a sinner.

Well, not that it is anyone's business, but my sister is also a Christian (see No. 3) and has been saved, so she isn't going to hell. Aren't we all sinners?

We are all fallen people (Thanks Adam and Eve) who must seek out forgiveness from the Lord. Each one of us sins at some point in our lives, and I believe that one sin isn't worse than another.

3. How is she a Christian? Christians don't believe in that "lifestyle."

Again, her "lifestyle" is between her and God; it is not your concern. Who says she can't believe in Jesus?

4. I can't be friends with you if your sister is gay.

That's OK, I understand. I also don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

5. Are you sure she is a lesbian?

That isn't a question for me, but yeah, that is what she has told me, so I'm sure. If you really want proof for yourself, go ask her.

6. Why would someone choose to be gay?

I have the same question; would you choose to be LGBTQ with all the hate in the world? That is why I believe you are born that way, but it is OK if you don't believe that.

These are just some of the conversations I've had with people who weren't really sure if they were supportive of the LGBTQ lifestyle or not. I have come to accept my sister and how she lives her life.

I understand that some people don't accept LGBTQ people and that is OK, but there are some statements and questions that should just be kept to yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
