This summer, I studied abroad for a month in London, England. The experience was incredible and life changing for many reasons. For anyone who has studied abroad, these thoughts might ring true to you as well. This is what I miss about my time abroad.
1. The people.
When you spend a month with a small group of people, you get to know them very well. Besides the time we all spent in class, many of us would tour museums and get lost in the city together. We will all have a special bond with one another because of our experience and time in London.
2. The history.
It seemed as though everywhere I turned there were places filled with so much history. Museums, like the Natural History Museum (pictured above), are just one example of this. There's history and stories behind everything from the Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Trafalgar Square and so many more places.
3. The food.
Fish and chips, Traditional English breakfast and Indian dishes are just some of the many great foods I enjoyed. Since people from all over the world came to London, they brought along many of their traditional foods. This means there are so many different types of foods!
4. The transportation.
It was so easy to get around London by using the tube or walking everywhere. Once we learned how to read the underground maps, we could get anywhere easily. This was so much more convenient than trying to get a cab.
5. The Tea.
Tea is a big part of British culture. Afternoons spent doing homework at a pub usually involved a pot of vanilla earl grey tea.
6. The gardens.
For a very populated city, London is very green. There are parks and gardens everywhere and when the weather is nice, people like to be outside. I miss walking through gardens with roses and other flowers growing everywhere. It was so beautiful and picturesque!
7. The pubs.
Pubs were the perfect place to go for a hearty dinner, cup of tea, a pint or even to watch a game. There were tons of pubs within walking distance and they were one of my favorite places to hang out.
8. The culture.
There's a whole section of the city dedicated to theaters. The arts are very important and very easily accessible! Plays, musicals, art museums and so much more are easy to find in London. I miss being somewhere where it was so convenient to experience these things!
9. The architecture.
Everything looks so different from the United States. Houses and flats were beautiful and each was a little unique. I'd go for walks or runs down streets with rows of flats. Many had gardens in the front that made the area smell lovely.
10. The shopping.
The beautiful and old department stores like Harrods and Fortnum & Mason were amazing. It felt so fancy and like stepping back in time. I literally felt like I was Denise from the show "The Paradise."
These are just a few things I miss about London and my study abroad experience.
