What Makes Someone Basic

According to two dudes in a Bojangles

What Makes Someone Basic

It is Sunday afternoon. My friends and I are sitting in Bojangles for our weekly biscuit fix, and exchanging stories of what happened the night before. Two guys who came with us -- J and T, for the sake of anonymity -- instantly commented on how basic we were acting.  This sparked an unnecessarily long conversation, during which the two of them spouted off the top of their heads, all the basic things people do. For your amusement, and a glimpse into the male mind, here is the list.

By the way, if you get offended that people call you basic for Instagramming a picture of your Starbucks red cup while wearing Uggs and leggings, this article is not for you. This is for the lighthearted. I am guilty of over half of these myself, so let's just laugh at this pretty accurate, sometimes random list of basic-ness from the perspective of two dudes.

1. You own anything monogrammed.

2.  You obsess over BuzzFeed and always post articles to your friend's Facebook page.

3. Your New Year's resolution is to go to the gym.

4. You take more than five selfies when you go out.

5. You sorority squat in pictures or put your hand on your hip.

6. You buy Starbucks almost every day.

7. Or you own your own reusable coffee cup or tumbler.

8. You wear flannel (I was wearing flannel when this was said).

9. You dress up for a themed frat party.

10. You put emojis next to your friend's names on your phone.

11. Your dream car is a Jeep Cherokee.

12. You have sorority stickers on your car.

13. You own a selfie stick. According to J, you are either basic or foreign -- no in between.

14.  You listen to "Jealous" by Nick Jonas.

15.  Or you like Taylor Swift. J admitted, "I'm guilty of this one. What's that one called? Oh, yeah, 'Blank Space.'"

16. You are the sole reason your family goes over in data charge for the month.

17. You wear fraternity event shirts anywhere.

18. You own Bean boots.

19. You wear those Bean boots when it is not raining (I was wearing my bean boots. It was also not raining).

20. You refer to anyone as "bae."

21. You stand in a circle with your friends and gossip about other girls.

22. Bridesmaids is in your top 20 favorite movies category.

23. You do birthday Instagram posts. "This includes guys, too," T said.

24. You go out of your way to get chips and queso ("Yeah, b****es love queso," T said).

25. The only week you workout is the week before spring break.

26. You have a piece of jewelry with your name on it.

27. You feel the need to establish that you are, in fact, not basic.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
