6 Old School Beauties And Why They Matter

All I ask, is that we, as women, love ourselves with or without a perfected contour and highlight.

Before the art of contour, messy buns, and ombre hair, there were overalls, neon colors, and lots and lots of hairspray. Throughout the 1980's and 1990's, beauty had a very different meaning than it does in the year 2016. Even though those ladies wore makeup and styled their hair in various ways, I cannot help but feel like they embraced their natural beauty just a little bit more than we do today.

To be fair, in the old days, they did not have thousands of YouTube "beauty" channels telling them exactly what to put on their faces, or how to style their hair. They also did not have a Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook news-feed continually filling their minds with what's truly "beautiful" and what isn't. The ladies in the former generations were free to be exactly who they wanted to be without the constant criticism of social media. As a millennial, I cannot even imagine a world without social media, or a world without those angry "Facebook warriors".

I think old school beauty is different because it was void of things like angry Instagram comments and the constant obsession with covering up your real face. I yearn for the day where a fresh face is considered beautiful again. A day where your brows don't have to always have to be "on fleek" and a day where your baby hairs can do whatever they please. We, as women, have a right to own our imperfections and to do so with pride. We should never strive to be perfect, we should simply strive to be in love with our reflections. End of story.

Social media has impacted not only our idea of beauty but the implementation of it. Women are tearing each other apart on social media platforms every day, because of jealousy and a lack of unity with our fellow sisters.

It's true that in every generation, beauty has played a huge role in the life of a woman. However, in this generation, it is more important than ever before to reach an unattainable idea of perfection.

Here are seven women that come to mind when I think of the phrase "old school beauty". In my opinion, this unique group of women perfectly demonstrate natural beauty and a genuine love for oneself. These are the girls that I grew up idolizing and cherishing. These are the ladies that we, as nineties babies aspired to be. I can only hope that the future generations will turn their attention back to what is really important, and that is, boldly and proudly loving and accepting themselves!

Whether we like it or not, we are stuck in the middle of this beauty-crazed, social media- fueled generation, so we might as well make the best of it. I doubt all of us will go full frontal like Alicia Keys when she decided to swear off makeup altogether, and that's perfectly fine. You can continue to wear makeup and still wholeheartedly love yourself, I have no doubt about that. All I ask is that we, as women, love ourselves with or without a perfected contour and highlight, and with or without the presence of positive Instagram comments or retweets. Only YOU can decide your worth, don't ever let anyone make you feel "unpretty".

"You can buy your hair if it won't grow
You can fix your nose if he says so
You can buy all the make up that M.A.C. can make
But if you can't look inside you
Find out who am I too
Be in the position to make me feel so
Damn unpretty
"

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
