What It's Really Like To Be A Hairdresser.

They always say that if you're doing something you love, you'll never work a day in your life. While, of course, I LOVE what I do, there are things that will make any job feel like "work". There are going to be ups and downs, good days, bad days, but all in all, I'm doing what I love.

1. You get an endless supply of AWESOME hair products.

We must get our products from a supply house that only licensed cosmetologist can shop at and we need a variety of products for the many different clients we serve. You have to have some for curly coarse hair, curly fine hair, fine straight hair, straight coarse hair, colored hair, damaged hair, normal hair, you name it! But before you use these on your clients, you can practice some cool products on yourself and those close to you to see how they really work, or if you yourself will fall in love with it!

2. You have no set schedule.

Yes, my hours may say 9-5 but in all reality, it may be 8am-10pm. You'll probably never have a Saturday off. You have to give up most of your social life to fit in appointments with a few clients who have busy days just like us. We don't get a 12pm-1pm lunch, it's more like a "cram in small bites of your breakfast on every 20-second break you have". But even though we may run ourselves, we are loyal to our clients and want nothing more than to help them and work with them, whenever that may be and however long it will take!

3. Hearing that dreading phrase, "I want silver hair, but I have black hair now."

Oh, and they want it in one session. Yes, they don't know any better, but it still gets humorous after a while. HAHA.

4. People think we overuse the word "professional".

But, that's what we are. We go to college just like everyone else. We studied and had classes for many, many hours. We had a tedious boards test like many other degrees. We gained a very deserved license. We started out having school for 1800 hours, and we continue to learn throughout our career. SO, that means we are the professionals. :)

5. We probably never have a clean house or are able to do any chores at all.

Back to number 2. We work many and long hours. By the time I've stood all day long, and get home at 8:30, dinner and laundry are far out of the question. I avoid inviting people over anymore, because the amount of dishes and clothes piled up, is well, embarrassing. But, after those long days, sleep will always win!

6. Last, but certainly not least, the joy that fills our hearts when a client leaves happy.

Any hairdresser will tell you about the pure joy they feel when they finish that silver ombre that took 7 hours, much product, all the feeling from my legs and so much brain power running through techniques and outcomes and she FINALLY sees it and is crying because of how much she loves it! At this point, we can forget all the hard and tedious work that was put into it, but we can focus on the glowing look on her face and she's going through all the styles and outfits she can pair with her new hair. And this, this joy, is what pushes me everyday to keep doing what I'm doing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
