St. Augustine once said, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." There is a certain excitement to knowing that there is an entire world out there that has yet to be explored, and that someday you might get to see it all. We watch our favorite book characters fall in love in Amsterdam, or backpack across the country with their friends, and we believe that we can be just like them too. We are the people filled with wanderlust, never wanting to settle down in one place, because another is always calling.
When I was a little girl I begged my mom to send me to Paris. I would put the Moulin Rouge on replay and drive her crazy singing Come What May, while planning all the things we could do when we eventually got there. Obviously, I was 12 and she told me I was insane, but there was not a day that I didn't dream of all the foreign cities and countrysides that were just waiting for me.
Five years later I was on a plane to Europe with my mom reminding me that sadly, I had to get on my plane to come home, although I wanted nothing more than to stay in Montmartre. I finally got to explore new land and immerse myself in a different country, and even though I was the furthest from my actual home, abroad is where I felt most at peace.
For those of us that have wanderlust embedded deep within our soul, it is not unrealistic to think that someday there will be more passport stamps in our books than physical possession that we own. When it comes down to it, we'd rather be scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, than spending what could be travel money on expensive technology or rent. We don't need 5-star hotels or restaurants to enjoy ourselves, because we know that two Euro baguettes taste the best. Whether it's a state away or across the world, the only thing that really matters is that there are always new memories being made.
There is a never ending hunger for those who are consumed with wanderlust. Staying put in one place drives us insane simply because we are fully aware of all the possibilities that await us in the future. It is both beautiful and inconvenient to want to be everywhere at once, and sometimes we sound highly unrealistic due to travel being so costly, but none of those things deter us. In reality, we are the people who are filled with a passion for life, and not just the one that keeps us in Pennsylvania while we finish school, but a real life filled with real adventures, that we can replay long after the adventure has ended. So go out and see the world, it's waiting for you.
P.S. Like Ellie in Up would say, adventure is out there!
